Obama
The Iraq war is still a major issue for the 2008 Election. Barack Obama has opposed the invasion from the beginning according to the New York Times. Obama plans to remove small groups of soldiers out of Iraq over a sixteen month period. He also wants to get the Iraqi people to start fending for themselves and working out their problems. TJ Haynes, Shawnee junior, supports Barack Obama’s plan for Iraq. “I used to be a diehard conservative but I’ve changed because of the war,” Haynes said. The ideals of the Republican Party and the reasons for going to war in Iraq have led Haynes to vote democrat. Haynes hopes that congress and the president will start as soon as possible to withdraw troops. Corbin Soliday, Kansas City, MO freshman also supports Barack Obama’s plan to end the war in Iraq. “I want to fund troops to keep them safe but we need a timetable for withdrawal,” Soliday said. Soliday is planning to vote for Obama and considers the war in Iraq as a key decision making factor. “We need to come up with a plan without suffering more loss,” Soliday said. Kate Weinstack, Overland Park sophomore wants a candidate like Obama who has new ideas on how to deal with the war in Iraq. “There has to be a different way that doesn’t cost more money or send more troops,” Weinstack said. The Iraq war is a heated issue that Obama will have to face before Election Day.
McCain
John McCain has also presented his plans for the Iraq War. McCain did vote for the original invasion and still supports the troops, like his own son, that are fighting for our freedoms according to the New York Times. McCain does not have a set timetable but he has said that we must be out of Iraq by 2013. McCain’s experience with war has drawn support from KU students like Devin Tenney, a junior from Olathe, KS. “I don’t support the war but [John] McCain’s past experience makes him more qualified to deal with the situation,” Tenney said. Tenney is voting for McCain because he believes that McCain’s time spent in war and as a P.O.W. make him more prepared to deal with the tough choices of being a president. There are some students like Noah Kellerman, Lawrence junior, who not only support McCain on the Iraq war but on other issues too. “We need to pull out and devise a better plan [for Iraq] but I support McCain on every issue,” Kellerman said. Some students are not so sure about their voting and political stance in general but will vote for McCain on the Iraq war. Dani Costanze, Olathe, KS freshman, realizes that the U.S. cannot just pull out immediately but she thinks we’re stuck and need to do something about it. “I’m going to vote for the person who can get us out safely and that [person] is John McCain,” Costanze said. John McCain’s experience gives him a better sense of how war happens but the Iraq war is so unpopular that he may have to make some tough choices when dealing with this issue.
