A lot of NFL divisions got closer during the weekend, and a few teams had to sweat out victories in the final seconds. Here’s how the action shook down in the NFL this weekend.
A study in futility
Just when you thought the Chiefs couldn’t get any worse, they blew a 21-0 lead to lose at home to Tampa Bay. A kickoff-return touchdown and a field goal got Tampa Bay back in the game before halftime, and then the Buccaneers proceeded to dominate the second half of the game. Leave it to the Chiefs to lose a game they led by three touchdowns. The teams actually had similar stats on paper, but the Bucs had more determination and that’s why they won the game. One positive note that fantasy owners can take away from the game is the performance of Jamaal Charles, who may be someone to watch for on waivers next week.
Ocho gets uno
Bengals wide receiver Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson helped his team get its first victory of the season with five catches for 37 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Cedric Benson, after getting booted from the Bears roster, ended up fitting right in with the Bengals and rushing for more than 100 yards and a touchdown. This game may be more telling of how bad the Jaguars are than of any positives for the Bengals, but at least Cincinnati won’t go winless this season. That burden is left on the shoulders of Detroit.
Lucky four-leaf clover
The Browns may be searching for a little luck: They announced they are turning to quarterback Brady Quinn to replace Derek Anderson as the starter. The former Notre Dame star has had to wait long enough, but waiting seems to be a pattern for him after he fell to the Browns two years ago with the 22nd pick in the draft. Quinn’s time is now, though, and considering the inconsistency on offense, a change of pace may be just the thing Cleveland needs.
Check the safety
You would have thought the Cowboys would have come out with guns a-blazin’ in their showdown with the Giants on Sunday, but it looked as though Dallas had some faulty ammunition. The Cowboys compiled a mere 183 yards of total offense and turned the ball over four times. Dallas has dropped from second in the division to last rather quickly. If the ‘Boys don’t find a way to reverse their momentum, they’ll be left out of the playoff picture completely and all their offensive stars could become irrelevant to fantasy owners.
