Choosing a new chant

The Kansan wants you to choose a new kickoff chant that has more to do with KU and less to do with Rob Schneider. We’ve got a list of choices – some from suggestions we’ve heard, and some we’ve come up with – but it’s up to you to pick the winner.

Reader poll

What student-submitted kickoff chant do you prefer?

  • "Beak 'em hawks!" 5% 79 votes
  • "Kayyyyyyyy (kick) Youuuuuuuu!" 51% 760 votes
  • "Rock chalk, beak 'em hawks!" 6% 102 votes
  • "Knock him back to (team hometown)!" 14% 208 votes
  • "Gooooooo (kick) KU!" 6% 100 votes
  • "Off with his head!' 6% 98 votes
  • "Rock his chalking head off!" 9% 137 votes

1484 total votes.

Here are your choices:

“Rock Chalk Jayhawk KU!” — Really fast, as it’s done at the end of the pregame chant.

Or, just plain “Rock Chalk Jayhawk!” — Keep it simple.

“Go…” before kickoff, then “Jayhawks!” when the ball is kicked. For reference, see Notre Dame’s “Go Irish!” chant.

“Make ‘em weep!” This is part of a line from the KU fight song: “But I’m the bird to make ‘em weep and wail.”

Reader poll

What Kansan-submitted kickoff chant do you prefer?

  • "Rock Chalk Jayhawk KU!" 24% 338 votes
  • "Rock Chalk Jayhawk!' 8% 114 votes
  • "Go...Jayhawks!" 46% 638 votes
  • "Make 'em weep!" 11% 158 votes
  • "Right between the eyes!" 9% 125 votes

1373 total votes.

“Right between the eyes!” This is a favored catchphrase of sports broadcaster Kevin Harlan, a KU alumnus. OK, maybe this is a bit of a stretch, but it's better than what we've got.

Don't like any of the options? Think you can do better? Submit your own! Shoot us an e-mail at kickoffchant@kansan.com by 5 p.m. Wednesday. Your choice could up end up in the student-submitted chants poll. After the first round of polling ends Wednesday, the winning chants in each category will have a run-off to determine the overall winner.

So, which will it be? Cast your vote now. Voting ends 5 p.m. Wednesday. The Kansan will announce the winner shortly thereafter, and the winning chant may make an appearance at Saturday's homecoming game against Texas Tech.

this poll is retarded.

I am not going to submit my own chant idea when I am perfectly fine with the one we have now.

How about we take a page from White Owls book and make it, "Let's rain on them hoes!"

Seriously, this is not a good choice that we're given here and people ought to stop worrying about it. This is not a big issue and I think it's funny how some people make a big issue out of it when we should be looking at bigger things, like Perkins wasting millions of dollars. Appropriate? Classy? Mangino, Marchiony, and Perkins don't know the meaning of the word.

I like awood's idea. Let's "Make it Rain on them hoes!!!!"

My suggestion is "Rip his lovely head off."

Rock his Chalking head off

If we went by the results of this poll, instead of keeping one of our few football-only traditions, we'd simply copy something Notre Dame does?

This whole argument is so stupid, people for the most part can't even make out what we're saying.

Plus, "make it rain on them hoes" is ten times more offensive than our current chat. Fu.ck is just a word, people need to get over it.

you got to be kidding me??? From this poll the Kansas is suggesting we need to be more original with our chants but yet the leading chant is a STOLLEN chant from Notre Dame? Are you F'n serious Kansan!?!?! why don't your writers pull there heads outta there butts and be original.

The Kansan is overestimating its influence if it thinks voting on a new chant is going to really change anything come kickoff.

As unoriginal as it is, 'rip his fu*king head off' is funny and in line with the football mentality. Football is a violent game and people love violence. Say what you will about this, but it's totally natural.

People have evolved into politically correct wusses (I considered using a certain p word, but it's too politically incorrect).

In ancient times, animals would literally rip people's fu*king heads off in front of roaring crowds! And now society gets angry if people having good healthy fun yell something that used to actually happen and be accepted in sport.

It's not like students are serious when they do this chant. If the return man got injured, they'd stop and the injured player would be applauded as he limped off the field.

One final thing: I don't know if it's in our jurisdiction as a newspaper to be trying to determine policy. A newspaper should report policy, not attempt to create it. Suggesting a new chant, if anywhere, should've been on the opinion page.

If people don't like the chant, don't chant it. Don't come up with lame alternatives and force your PC will upon the masses.

What I find the most stupid about all of this is that the majority of the people having the argument are people who were not around when the chant started. There were very few of us in the stands, and we were very bored. And so, the few times we had the good fortune of kicking off, we screamed. And the more we screamed, the harder we seemed to hit. And I know, from a variety of sources, that the team enjoyed the screaming, because they knew that there was actually someone out there watching the game and cheering them on.

If the fair weather crowd that has recently started coming to games wants to change things up, just yell louder than the other patrons-- you don't even have to yell "something", you just need to yell. The people you see really pushing this movement aren't people who are yelling-- they are people who are SITTING IN PRESS BOXES and annoyed with those they see below.

I prefer the poll on the LJWorld for this question. In their poll, you can choose the option "these chants make me want to rip my head off". It also seems to be winning out...and I cannot blame the people.

Another vote for "Rock his chalking head off!"

I like the current 'chant.' What I don't like is a college newspaper trying to censor the masses. This seems to be contrary to the idea of what a newspaper is supposed to be about. This was not even an issue until you morons started whining about it.

If we need a new chant, I think it should be "Fuk Fuk Fuk Fuk Sh*t!"

i think all of these choices are completely useless...we are not in the 1st grade!

if i had to choose anything it would be "rock his chalking head off"

but in reality- i have to agree with oldgoldlegs...i find it interesting how people (mangino, press, and company) do not complain about the chant until we-the true fans-bring in all the fair-weather fans...only to have them bash a tradition that is older than their allegiance.

Are you f'ing kidding me? These are some of the stupidest, most retardedest chants I have ever heard in my life. I don't know who made these up, but they should be shot. Many times. How about, someone our age comes up with some, not an 80 year old paraplegic.

That is all.

These all suck. You couldn't get anything better?

I really like the "Rock his Chalking head off," idea. It's clever, it's original, it's an inside joke that would take some explaining a few years down the road. I think it has the perfect ingredients for a lasting tradition. But I may be over-thinking this.

How about "Kick em' in the dick!"

if someone really honestly voted for either of the last two I may rip my own effing head off... those last two have got to be a joke?

One person said, "I find it interesting how people (mangino, press, and company) do not complain about the chant until we-the true fans-bring in all the fair-weather fans...only to have them bash a tradition that is older than their allegiance."

What I find interesting is how people think "rip his f*cking head off" is some kind of KU tradition. The movie is older, but the chant has only been at Kansas for about two years. If that. It's not a situation where "it will never go away, because people have always done it," as I have heard some people say.

And yes, it was an issue before The Kansan started talking about it. The Athletics Department took issue with it last year as well, using The Kansan as its mouthpiece to request that students stop saying it.

As for this comment: "The people you see really pushing this movement aren't people who are yelling-- they are people who are SITTING IN PRESS BOXES and annoyed with those they see below," only two Kansan writers are in the press box at any given football game. The rest of the staff is just concerned with cleaning up an ugly mark against the University.

I think what's being lost in all of this is when and why this chant started. It was the week we played Nebraska and Bill Callahan had the week before made the famous throat slit gesture on the sideline.

It was funny that week when it was chanted (for which I did participate) and tolerable the rest of the year. Now it's annoying and dumb. I go to games now and ask students 'why are you yelling that' to which the response is almost always 'i dunno...cuz its cool.' Sounds like a good reason to do crack or heroin 'everyone else is doing it, and its cool I guess.' Guess what, it's not cool or funny anymore. There was only one game that it was. Please stop doing it. You all look like idiots.

Actually, the f---ing chant, to my knowledge, first started appearing at KU games in 2002. The amount of people doing it then were in the dozens, and it expanded towards the masses in the Fort Worth Bowl... the coming out party for KU football also happened to be the first time the chant became yelled by enough people to be heard on the opposite side of the field. With our success the chant was truly born.

"The amount of people doing it then were in the dozens, and it expanded towards the masses in the Fort Worth Bowl... the coming out party for KU football"

For the faithful: Who died?

another vote for 'rock his chalking head off' i was thinking of something similar but someone beat me to it. so if we must abandon the current chant...that's my vote. Although it's going to take a lot more than a newspaper poll to make a bunch of drunk college kids follow suit...

"Rock his chalking head off" is the only decent idea I've heard so far.

I don't understand why we need to say anything at all here. No other school does. We don't need to start a tradition at all, just yell during the kickoff and that's that just please whatever we do - don't don't yell "rip his f'ing head off" come on Rob Schnieder sucks.

You can make as many polls and as many chants as you want.

The REAL question is...how will it ever be enforced!! haha Force students to say it or get expelled?

I'm unbiased about the chant, but i'm really curious about how this "change" will actually happen.

If our chant was just "rip his head off," no one would have a problem with it. It's just a word.

freedom of speech yo.

This is worse than when they had that stupid poll to pick the new t-shirt over muck fizzou and i might add that those picked were some of the worst slogans i have ever seen. Heres an idea, we all keep yelling rip his F*cking head off and the people that are opposed to it can shut up and be the silent majority, I am not about to change anything because some losers think its un-classy, its a college football game, if these people haven't realized it yet about 95 percent of the student section is drunk and they are going to chant it regardless. And as far as those choices go for picking a new chant, all of those ideas are terrible, make it original, lets not all yell rock chalk Jayhawk! we yell that all through the game, and as a final point, in no way will i ever borrow anything from Notre Dame

The University is getting fined for the students saying the chant, and ESPN2 is threatening to take away our televised games. Even without the fines, the loss of televised games could mean losing thousands (and possibly up to hundreds of thousands) in advertising dollars, and the quality of football recruits would drop as well. No chant, no matter how popular, is worth sabotaging the football team like that.

"rock his chalking head off" is the best I have heard, agreed.... But what does that even mean?

I could care less about ESPN2. They have ruined the football season for me by forcing nearly all of our home games to take place around or before noon. I deliberately set up my work schedule to have Saturday afternoons off so I could see these games, and now my sports pass has gone to waste! Dollars signs for the school mean nothing to me when its essentially my happiness being traded for them.

Furthermore, on the subject, no one is going to stop the chant. Give it up. It won't happen. I understand the Kansan's and Athletic Department's stance to encourage the younger students to think its frowned upon by everyone else, but it's not. Everyone I talk to on campus loves it. Stop trying to give it a bad wrap. As a media outlet, you FAIL when you do this. It's surprising that in such a liberal town where people, who I'm sure are part of the newspaper staff, complain about the one-sidedness of Fox news, the same people turn hypocritical and turn a blind eye to make the opinion of the Athletic Department seem the opinion of the masses.

There's a lot of shame to go around. Put some of it on the Athletic Department, some of it on the student body, but the majority of it on the Kansas staff. It's disgusting when a stupid chant gets more attention than the anniversary of September 11th. (For those of you who do not remember, the Kansan ran NOTHING about the event on this year's September 11th, and instead ran a front page article that was more than pointless)

Oh, and by the way, today people loved my idea of "Rip his f*cking head off!" T-shirts when I said it in jest. Don't be surprised if someone takes it and runs with it.

Scratching the itch sometimes only makes it worse.

What I don't get is that nobody understands that the current kickoff chant just makes KU look incredibly CLASSLESS and IMMATURE.

Mel2288, show me some proof that ESPN is fining KU.

With or without the chant, if KU keeps winning...the demand for KU games will increase and ESPN will televise the games that the masses wants to see, even with empty threats.

"BOCCE BALLS!"

I think Mel is reading the same article saying that Obama is a terrorist and muslim

I like "rock his chalking head off." It's fun and original plus it's a good inside joke for the students to have.

how about "HOW LONG TILL BASKETBALL SEASON?"

I'm so embarrassed by our student section. I sit in the front row every game in front of a bunch of classless frat-boy morons. Who yell out cuss words and sexual innuendos every 5 seconds, then look around with this goofy smile on their face like a second grader who thinks they just got away with something really clever and great. You're not 10 years old anymore. The national media is making fun of our school, and your ruining an otherwise great atmosphere. It's not cute, and it's not funny. Come and enjoy a football game, if you want to get away with yelling cheep obscenities go on the Maury show where you belong. It's a family atmosphere as much as you may wish it was a drunken rave, it's not it's a football game. Keep your dumb chant out of the best school in the country.

ROCK HIS CHALKING HEAD OFF

ADD IT TO THE OPTIONS!!!!!!

I know this poll isn't scientific, but to not have the option for "other" or "don't change the chant" on the original poll defeats the concept of the "open forum." What's the point of this then, except to "reaffirm" what the editors already want to think? (Only not really because the suggestions suck.)

I'm feeling oppressed. I need a shower.

All these options make us look like douches! Your saying everyone should join in and make this a tradition with a new chant? These are horrible choices! And the Kansan keeps picking at this issue and never lets it die! Its pretty much their golden story of the year! The Kansan misses so many good stories out there in world but lets instead hear how the chant arguement is doing every 24 hours... I imagine they could make a weekend edition just about this chant BS! People just need to quit a bunch of negative nancys and get over it. Its not the end of the world. Look at what other schools say and they aren't having issues. But I guess everyone thinks we are row models to the world!

By the way this survey is gonna stop drunken people from yelling what they want to when the want. Case closed!

"The Kansan wants you to choose a new kickoff chant that has more to do with KU and less to do with Rob Schneider."

This is at least the second time I have seen the Kansan or some other KU source try to argue against the chant by implying that a reference to a comedy is tacky. I agree, it is tacky as hell and, in my opinion, this is the best reason to be against the chant - not the offensive language. Even MORE tacky, however, is the display of the Tommy Boy clip when a big play occurs. KU Administration/Athletics Department: If you're going to try to manipulate the student body into acting the way you want let's at least be consistent about it. The students do not give a damn that you ask them not to curse. Also, those "new chant" options are laughably bad.

I think,"Rip his fcking balls/dck off," would be a fine alternative. Maybe the Kansan should consider it as an option...

Can who ever came up with the new chant options be burned at the stake. I dont really care how classless it makes us look, i mean then maybe we should stop chanting you let the whole team down, or (insert coaches name) Your Fired!, and all the other clearly insulting things we yell, hey maybe we should take our freedom of speech and toss it into the sea. Point is no one is gonna stop chanting it because people want it to stop, so i wanna ask this question, just because a few people are uncomfortable and unhappy we should stop whatever we are doing to Accommodate them?

So it looks like about 40 people think the poll is lame-yet over 2000 people have voted so far....

spoken like a true class act eloc,

It's real sweet how everyone would rather our school be known for saying a classless cheer, than for being the 2008 Orangebowl and National Basketball Champions, because instead of talking about how good our team is, PTI and the rest of ESPN are talking about how dumb our fans are. Thanks for taking away from everything our athletics teams have accomplished by acting like idiots. Anyone who thinks other schools act like this are wrong.

Okay first of all, we agree with all of the people who think that this poll is freaking retarded, the majority of the student section is drunk by the time they get to the game, and its not like someoone is going to come pull you out of the stands if they see you yell the chant, so why would we stop?

second of all, since when has ESPN said anything about the chant? last time i watched the game all the commentators could do was badmouth KU the whole damn time, you cant even hear the fans yelling until they put the camera right in our faces, which is a rareity anyways

and thirdly- for spaghetticat- if you dont like what the people who sit by you are saying then MOVE TO THE BACK! DUH!!! football games are supposed to be fun and if those people think that yelling things like that is fun then they have the right to say it, and besides, im pretty sure that those football players on the other team could give a f*uck and i dont ever hear anybody else around ever complaining about it

If there is one thing good about the current chant, its that the student section does it together... I know that has probably been said, and maybe the closest thing anyone has to argue for the chant, but it's true. Go to any great stadium, and the first thing you'll notice is how the crowd, how the students, get into the game.

I think a better solution would be to get the marching band to host a "dress rehearsal" before every homegame... I think the band does some great in game cheers and chants and would be great at leading the student section if they were aware. Maybe even relocating the band would help lead us in some chants... what about behind the student section?

Regardless, I think "rip his f**king head off" well lose its steam this year... for one reason or another. I don't think that any of these chants will take off. Instead, well probably just do keys and a "ooooooooo.... OOOO!"

Due to popular demand, "Rock his chalking head off!" has been added to the poll. Do with it what you will. If you can get it past 625 votes in the next 18 hours, I will bow down. :-)

Can you put none of the above up there? Or keep the one we have? Greatly appreciated! Let the polls decide!

csommerville

Ok just to prove you out that other colleges yell vulgar sayings at sporting events! http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2007-10-31-fan-behavior_N.htm

Proof right there dude. And i never said this is a tradition. If you looked at the reason for voting which is at the very top of the page it says "Become a part of history and help pick a new kickoff tradition." Ya so I never said the whole rip his head off was a traditon cus its not. You apparently need to get glasses or just dont read. And there are tons of stories out there they dont cover worth a damn. 9/11 sucked, they dont talk about any foreign actions that affect the U.S. besides once in a while Iraq, the politics are horrible, hell might as well through in the used car ads why your at it.

I reely lik teh one we had right now, butt if its must be changed what about a diffrent line fro the Watterboy? Like this little doosy ,"Captain insane-o shows no mercy."

Aslo, i saw mangino eating at Mr. Gatti's the lasst day it were in bisness. Coincidence?...I thank not.

kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk uuuuuuuuuuu may work but, Off with his head!' and "Rock his chalking head off!" are you serious kansan thats about the stupidist thing ive ever heard.... ever... awful could you imagine 40,000 ppl yelling OFF WITH HIS HEAD... LMFAO wow...

"Knock him back to (team hometown)!" wow nevermind my last post i missed this option... holy crap people whos voting for this a bunch of 3rd graders? If you think us students are going to chant KNOCK HIM BACK TO TEXAS TECH or some crap that would sound sooooo awful especially since it is impossible to say that in unison and sound decently cool... thats a train wreck waiting to happen if that gets elected.... kansas do your self a favor and give up... you lost

I think what everybody's overlooking is that this is the first time more than four comments have been posted on an article on Kansan.com

no no no, my cusin gos to Texas Teck. Wenever he ax me to come visit him, he said, "Say man, you shood come down to teck fro teh weekend." Anways, i asked my cusin what Lubbock was and he hade know ideas, hermeschick. Looks as thouhg you're wrong.

aslo...it would be rad if we chagned the chant to, "Rip out his endocrine system and wear it as a hat!" tell me what you thank. Gary busey sayed it and i tought it sounded smatr.

I think what everybody's overlooking is that this is the first time more than four comments have been posted on an article on Kansan.com

Not so. The Jesus letters churned up some traffic. :-)

I would rather not say anything than those replacement chants. Our current chant is a unique chant that no other school is using. GOOOOO (SCHOOL) wow that is creative...

College students using profanity is unheard of right? Students have been using this chant for multiple years and all the sudden its a problem? If the university wants to do someone productive why not stop the hundreds of underaged students from drinking at the houses that are across from the stadium. I'm sorry this entire chant has just been blown out of proportion.

Parents should understand when they are taking young children to games that their is always going to be drunk students acting stupid and yelling obscenities. Multiple players have already stated that our current chant gets them pumped and isn't that the point of a chant?

I will proudly continue the tradition at each game even if I am the only one.

Get him in the nuts!

Perfect chant. No curse words and a little vulgar like the original.

This whole chant business has put us between a rock and a hard place, on one side we chant something that is classless but extremely funny and in my opinion shows how awesome kansas fans are but people are mad about it and apparently it makes us look bad, on the other end, the kansan which is supposed to be an un-biased newspaper has supplied us with the most childish chant options i have ever seen, say we do choose one and yell it, not only will we be ridiculed for having no originality but sounding like a bunch of douche bags at the same time.....so here we stand stuck, no one is going to decide on anything and the people i blame for this whole mess are the people that started bitching about the chant in the first place we wouldnt even be in this whole mess...and heres my option for the chant im gonna throw into the ring....Break his F*cking Face!.....thats original and not from the waterboy

I've got the best idea yet.

"Run down the field and lightly slap him on the wrist!!!"
