Motor causes fire in Natural History Museum

A broken motor in the ground floor of the Natural History Museum, 1345 Jayhawk Blvd, caused light smoke to fill the building, said Mark Bradford, Lawrence fire and medical chief.

An automatic alarm went off at 7:41 p.m. Friday and police cars, two fire trucks and two ambulances arrived at the scene shortly after. No one was in the building and only the motor that caused the smoke was damaged. Bradford estimated it would cost $1,000 to $2,000 to replace the motor. Firefighters opened the building’s windows and turned on a fan to get rid of the smoke.
