United Students wins Student Senate election for third straight year

United Students has won the Student Senate election, with 46 percent of the vote. May Davis' appointment as vice president rests upon the success of her appeal against an election commission decision made earlier this week. Envision's J.J. Siler and Alex Porte finished less than 100 votes behind, with 44 percent. Students of Liberty received 6 percent and Free State finished with 3 percent. Check Kansan.com later for more information, including video coverage of the results and candidates' reactions.

Thank God that the student body wasn't fooled by Envision's sketchy tactics.

Congrats Mason and May!!!

Closest election in years. Lets see what happens next year! Good work to all who were involved.

@Hawker777: Have some tact. At least Envision didn't have a candidate thrown off the ballot for disregarding elections code. Take a lesson from go_jayhawks and be polite to your fellow Jayhawks. Being a complete douche to everyone [even on the internet] won't earn you respect; it just makes you appear completely immature.

I supported Envision, yet I still extend a congratulations to Mason and May. It will certainly be an interesting year on Mount Oread to say the least.

Disappointed though I am, I will extend a congratulations to Mason. May, however, deserves none for her tampering with the elections process.

I hope that with the elections loss, also, that Envision's platforms will not be forgotten, particularly ethics reform. Also, I really hope that Mason does a better job than McGonigle, and actually improves campus in some way, instead of proposing that we cut funding for campus media and safety.

Negative campaigns only go so far. Job well done to all those who didn't involve themselves in the negative campaign tactics. I am so excited about the plus minus reform we're going to accomplish next year. Way to go KU

Yeah United Students! All the negativity from Envision must make this that much sweeter. It's great that the student body could see that May did nothing wrong and was falsely accused (nice try, Envision). All United Students has to do is let the truth speak for itself and I know May will win the appeal.

Wait a second, the title of this story is misleading. While it's true Mason Heilman will be the next student body president, Envision won far more seats than United Students did.

Honestly, since student senate coalitions aren't really political parties or anything, I really hope that Mason does well. I'm not all too familiar with how Senate functions, but I think he ought to extend a hand to both the Envision and Students of Liberty candidates and incorporate and consider some of the ideas contained in their platforms. The truth is that all three coalitions had some good ideas (and some bad ones), and they should all get a voice. I think all three of these guys running do actually care about the students and the university, as seeing as how so few people do, they all should get a say.

Heck, throw Tutu in there and make it the official duty of the VP to bake cookies for everyone else.

Congratulations Mason! I won't be around next year, and I really thought they could unseat your dynasty, but I hope you do a good job and remain as level headed as you were as StudEx chair.

As for May, you don't deserve to be VP in my opinion (thanks to some sketchy political maneuvering), but you are partly to blame for the high voter turnout this year! Thanks to your scandalous actions, more people than last year actually cared about this election and voted!

And lastly, special thanks to Tutu Lee. Without your youtube video, the overreaction of school administration and law enforcement, and the detailed media coverage, disenfranchised students would not have a reason to care about student politics. Your humourous video may have gotten the cops to take all of your valuables, but people who couldn't care less about student politics actually voted in this election, if nothing more than to spite the man.

And to all of the people who ran with Envision, thanks. You are all awesome and dedicated people. Without you being there over the last 3 years, I wouldn't have cared about the university or politics at all. Thanks for introducing to me how great being involved really feels.

Good luck with next year everyone, I might be back...maybe.

Mr. Devin Lowell (it's not that hard to figure out),
Don't worry, Mason will definitely extend a hand to the other coalitions. He's an upstanding guy. And I'm sure Alex and JJ will both still get the opportunity to be heavily involved with Senate.

P.S. know who I am? : )

But what about Adam Wood? If anyone is sensible in these tight times, it's him. And I'm not even joking here. Fiscal responsibility ftw.

It'll be interesting for certain. Selling votes at the wheel will only make their trek to certification that much more difficult.

The reason they didn't show up at the Envision party tonight like every other winning party has is because they know that they scammed their way to the top and they are ashamed of it.

Good luck trying to get an exec staff when you're outnumbered 39-27 after the campaign that you just ran.

Envision; select your upcoming battles wisely. I doubt you have grounds to throw out the whole election (no matter the issues with laptops or the Chancellor's cheap intercession); but additionally the student body will need a leader during this time of change with the departure of the Chancellor and Provost, and contesting that leader's existence may not be the way to go.

No matter what happens with Ms. Davis (which is out of the students' hands now), use your strength in numbers to dominate the executive board. Yes, some person you know with United Students will cry and blubber about how they're a nice person and you should certify them. Don't. Yes, Mason will threaten to leave the spots open. Let him. If the past few years have shown us anything, it is that overall United Students' executive staff is ineffective. That only five people voted at the Burge Union polling site in the city elections shows how pathetic the current SLAB director is; and I do not mean this as a personal slight-- I have no idea who the person is. The fact that the Student Senate UDK ads now number below a half dozen every day while Outreach languishes shows how unmotivated and unconcerned with the student body your Communications staff are.

Hold out for true leaders that will FIGHT for the issues (platform and those yet to be seen) this next year; 2601 votes gives you the right to do as much.
