Witness to student’s death testifies, describes collision
A witness to the death in February of an international graduate student testified in a Johnson County court Thursday.
Dwayne Duncan, 25, of Lawrence, testified during a preliminary hearing of Steven Kyle Cummins, the 25-year-old Johnson County resident who prosecutors say is responsible for the death of Dimitri Mavridorakis, a 24-year-old MBA student from Saint Etienne, France. Mavridorakis died in a motor vehicle collision on I-35 in Merriam on the morning of Feb. 7.
Duncan said he and Mavridorakis were on their way back to Lawrence in Duncan’s black Chevrolet Cavalier after visiting the Power and Light district in Kansas City, Mo., when the car overheated. Duncan said he and Mavridorakis were attempting to push the car into a hotel parking lot when Cummins’ silver Dodge Dakota hit Duncan’s car from behind. Duncan said he was thrown to the ground and suffered contusions to his head and cuts to his arms and elbow. Duncan said the next thing he remembered was waking up in a hospital later that day. Mavridorakis was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cummins is charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of reckless aggravated battery, Each charge is a felony with a penalty of about 31 to 43 months of jail time.
Cummins returned to custody at the New Century Adult Detention Center in Gardner. His next court appearance was set for 2 p.m. Monday. A jury trial in the case will begin June 22.
