Earth Day celebrated its 40th anniversary this week, and the idea of being environmentally conscious is common among us. However, there is still a lot to be done to actually alter our behavior to benefit the environment. One way to act on these principles is quite simple: Reduce the amount of paper used at KU!
Does anyone have any idea how many reams of paper are used here at KU?
Every student should print their assignments on both sides of each page. Practically every printer these days accommodates two-sided printing. Even if you have to take out the paper and re-insert it into the paper tray, this only takes a few seconds. This cuts it in half. You say you print your papers at the library? Well, print them both-sided there! On the print screen, go to properties and select two-sided. At the library, you won’t have to turn over the paper. Easy enough so far; keep going. Change your spacing from double to single! There is half again.
Now, most teachers will object to this. They’ll say that they need double-spacing so they can write their comments. What? Where else do they have the luxury of double-spacing to write comments? In their books? In their journals? Teachers routinely comment and evaluate written items in these media that are single-spaced. Accommodations can be made to do this for student papers as well! Besides, they will have much less to carry around.
About recycling, one thing is true. If we wait until it becomes convenient and easy, it won’t happen. If everyone just makes a simple change of behavior, the result would be dramatic!

Letter: University could make a difference by saving paper
Here's the thing about recycling paper. All the paper manufactured in the US is made from pulp grown on tree farms. This may not seem important but it is, you see recycling paper requires lots of nasty chemicals that tend to be bad for the environment, more than it takes to make new paper. Meanwhile using fresh pulp to make paper means that more trees from farms have to be cut down, which means more trees get planted to help meet the demand. So the ultimate effect of recycling paper is that you actually introduce more pollution to the environment while releasing larger volumes of CO2 as opposed to planting more trees, and supporting American tree farmers.

Excellent point, tictac.
Also, it is entirely inaccurate to say that you can print double-sided pages at the public computer labs. This is not possible at any of the campus locations.
The only way to print double-sided on the public computers is by opening the printer and reinserting the paper to print again. Not only does the library staff definitely not appreciate this, it will also more than likely cause someone else's material to print on your used paper or vice versa. Then you've wasted paper and money for you and the other person as well. The same goes for people trying to print resumes on their own special paper. It's a huge inconvenience to everyone else, and it just doesn't work.
If it's that important to you, it's best to just buy your own printer.
