The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is considering imposing a fee increase to compensate for a tight budget. The current economic struggles are being felt by the department which may start charging people to use recreation centers, which have been free in the past.

Visitors of Lawrence's five recreation centers or pools might see a fee increase in the near future.
Currently most sports leagues and exercise classes require a user free. Many of the Parks and Recreation facilities are paid for with taxes. However with lower property values, less money is coming in. The department also receives approximately $600,000 from the state liquor tax, but the state may be holding onto that money this year.
The cardio and weight rooms at community buildings, the South Park wading pool, and the Prairie Park Nature Center are at the top of the list for seeing new user fees.
