The KU Athletics Department has released a statement saying Coach Mark Mangino resigned his position as head football coach tonight.
KU Athletics Director Lew Perkins stands outside the Anderson Family Football Complex Thursday night after coach Mark Mangino resigned. "He and I have reached a mutually satisfactory agreement that reflects the appreciation we have for his efforts on behalf of Kansas Football," Perkins said. Mangino coached for eight years at Kansas.
Football players headed to Anderson Family Football Complex tonight, reportedly to head to a meeting with Athletics Director Lew Perkins.
“We appreciate the eight years that Mark has given to rebuilding our football program,” Perkins said in the statement. “He and I have reached a mutually satisfactory agreement that reflects the appreciation we have for his efforts on behalf of Kansas Football."
Perkins called an internal investigation of the department earlier this month, around the same time as reports surfaced that Mangino had been physically abusing players.
Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little said Perkins had kept her informed about the situation.
"Athletics Director Lew Perkins kept me fully apprised throughout this process and I support the resolution that he has reached with Coach Mangino," she said in a statement.
Perkins said in the release that coaches David Beaty, Clint Bowen and Bill Miller would share interim head coaching duties until a new head coach was found.

Mangino resigns, search for new coach to begin
Thanks for nothing, Perkins. You better hope you find a good replacement or you're next, buddy. We'll miss you, Coach Mangino! Thanks for all you did for our program. You have been an amazing success story here at KU, and these past few weeks cannot take that away. Jayhawks love you and have enjoyed these years with you.
