In a decision that went as previously expected, junior wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe announced his intentions to forego his senior season and enter the 2010 NFL draft.
Briscoe said he talked with his mom, Shannon Greene, Monday and then me with former Kansas coach Mark Mangino and other members of the coaching staff.
After those meetings, Briscoe said his decision was finalized.
Junior receiver Dezmon Briscoe puts up his arms to separate him from Missouri safety Jasper Simmons for a 74 yard touchdown. Kansas tied the game after completing a two point attempt to make it 36-36.
“The Kansas program has really done a lot for me,” Briscoe said. “There is no other school that I would have rather been at. I want to thank the University of Kansas for the opportunity to play for their football team.”
In his three seasons at Kansas, Briscoe piled up a school-record 3,240 receiving yards — the fourth highest total in Big 12 history.
Briscoe also produced the top two single-season record for most yards. He had 1,407 yards in 2008 and 1,337 yards in 2009.
Now his attention shifts to the NFL draft.
Briscoe said he hasn’t hired an agent and that he will focus on finishing out this semester academically.
After that Briscoe, who said he ranks in the top 10 in receivers entering the draft, could possibly travel to Tampa, Fla., to join former Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant for workouts.
“After all this stuff that has been going on with coach Mangino and the coaching staff and the season we had and the seniors I’ve grown to love and the people in my class," Briscoe said. "I wanted to leave but I didn’t."
Briscoe said his biggest focus in preparing for the draft will be improving his speed for the NFL combine, a time when players’ stocks can either skyrocket or dip.
“I’m hearing a whole bunch of late first round or early second,” Briscoe said. “I just hear stuff that I go and look at on the Internet. I don’t know. I guess it depends how I do at the combine.”
In his meeting with reporters, Briscoe also made sure to thank Mangino and former teammates for helping him through off-the-field issues that resulted in his suspension during Kansas’ spring practices before the 2009 season.
Briscoe also said that he had talked with former Kansas cornerback Aqib Talib, who told Briscoe that he should seriously considering entering the NFL.
“It’s sad,” Briscoe said. “Not the point to where I’m going to cry about it, but it’s sad knowing the people I’ve grown to love, and I’m not going to be there with them anymore. I’m going to start a whole new life with whole new friends.”
