Cem Basoflas, Turkey sophomore, makes a first appearance before Judge T. George via video teleconference from the Douglas County Jail. Basoflas was arrested Feb. 4 on charges of animal cruelty and criminal sodomy with an animal. Bond was set at $12,000. Basoflas will be released on bond with the stipulations that he have no contact with animals and that he surrender his passport. Basoflas' next hearing is scheduled for Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. Basoflas was already scheduled to appear in court on a previous charge of animal cruelty that was filed in August.

Douglas County prosecutors filed a felony animal cruelty charge Friday against a KU student who was arrested on charges of animal cruelty and criminal sodomy Wednesday afternoon.

Lawrence police arrested Cem Basoflas after the property managers of his residence in the 2100 block of Heatherwood Drive called emergency services Wednesday morning. The arrest came after officers found a large quantity of blood at the scene and questioned Basoflas upon his return to the apartment, said Sgt. Bill Cory, public information officer for the Lawrence Police Department.

The Douglas County prosecutor who filed the charge at the first appearance hearing Friday afternoon said more charges may be filed as police continued to investigate. The prosecutor said the charge involved a dog and may involve other animals.

At the hearing on Friday, Pro Tem Judge James George set Basoflas' bond at $12,000 and arranged for the next court appearance to be Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. Basoflas is being held at the Douglas County Jail.

Basoflas has another pending felony animal cruelty case after an arrest on Aug. 16, 2008.

Basoflas is a 20-year-old sophomore from Turkey. He has previously attended Fort Hays State University. He is staying in the U.S. under a student visa.

There is something severely wrong with this man's mind. I hope he gets mental treatment though he might choose to reject that and then where are we? At least someone did call the police to stop this behavior.

I don't think it's his mind that needs treatment. There are some people who are not mentally ill, they are just plain mean. Too bad our court system is such that he will not do any jail time. Maybe being treated the way he treats animals would do him some good.

Innocent until proven guilty?

Being unable to prove something happened doesn't mean it did not happen. My guess is the victim (if still alive) won't be able to testify! This guy should be locked up until a legal determination is made. (Is that better?:)

According to LJW the dog is dead.

Since he was already facing pending animal cruelty charges, he should not have been allowed to own animals for the time being. Yes, we know, innocent until proven guilty, but that doesn't mean that precautions can't be taken. For instance, when a police officer is accused of doing something wrong, he's placed on administrative leave.

I'm so glad that when I search "DOG SODOMY" it brings me to this page.
