Kansas Basketball vs. OSU
The Jayhawks defeated the Cowboys 78-67 during Kansas' 37th consecutive home win Saturday.
KANSAS 78, OKLAHOMA STATE 67
Game Over
Kansas had no trouble taking care of things at home today. Oklahoma State didn't shoot well and Cole Aldrich owned the boards.
Check back to Kansan.com later for full coverage of this game, including Case Keefer's "Blog" Allen and The Jay Report podcast.
KANSAS 73, OKLAHOMA STATE 57
2:56 left in the second half
The Cowboys have never found their shot and it's resulted in a blowout in Allen Fieldhouse.
Oklahoma State plays just seven players, and until Keiton hit a three with four minutes to go, it hadn't gotten any points from its bench. The Cowboys are just aren't deep enough or athletic enough to run with the Jays at home.
KANSAS 56, OKLAHOMA STATE 39
11:43 left in the second half
Kansas is better than Oklahoma State and today the Jays are out-hustling the Cowboys. That's something coach Travis Ford couldn't allow to happen and still expect to win.
The Jays are getting after loose balls and turning them into easy points to extend their lead to 17. Oklahoma State won't be able to win this game, so the best thing it can do is pull within 12 to beat the spread.
KANSAS 44, OKLAHOMA STATE 31
15:54 left in the second half
Oklahoma State has got little chance of coming back unless it can start playing some defense.
The Jayhawks are still doing whatever they please offensively and the Cowboys can't crawl back into it without forcing a few stops.
KANSAS 37, OKLAHOMA STATE 24
Halftime
There's not a lot going right for Oklahoma State offensively. Leading scorer James Anderson is 0-for-7, Byron Eaton is 0-for-3 and the team is hitting just 26 percent from the floor.
On the other side, Kansas is hitting 43 percent of its shots and its out-rebounding Oklahoma State by six. Cole Aldrich already has 10 rebounds.
KANSAS 33, OKLAHOMA STATE 19
3:04 left in the first half
KU fans have been getting increasingly frustrated with the referees and it's inspired all kinds of yells and cusses towards the striped ones.
Most of them are generic and boring, but one guy sitting behind us called out to a referee during an inbounds pass, "Where did you get your refs license? A Cracker Jack box?" Just terrific.
KANSAS 24, OKLAHOMA STATE 14
7:55 left in the first half
The scoring came to a screeching halt after the last media timeout. Each squad mustered just one bucket and the game continues to be very physical.
That probably give a little advantage to the Cowboys because they've been able to slap and claw Aldrich down low without hearing a whistle. It hasn't kept Aldrich off the boards, though, as he already has seven rebounds.
KANSAS 22, OKLAHOMA STATE 12
11:51 left in the first half
Ladies and gentlemen, Tyrone Appleton is about to enter the game. We're not sure how or why, but it's the first time Appleton will play significant minutes since early in the non-conference season.
Elsewhere on the court, Keiton Page has entered the game for Oklahoma State and I'm still trying to figure out how this kid is any good at basketball. So far he looks barely good enough for a junior high jayvee team, but maybe he's got some tricks up his sleeves.
KANSAS 12, OKLAHOMA STATE 4
15:24 left in the first half
Cole Aldrich's mask isn't staying on straight, but that hasn't stopped him from pouring in four quick points. Besides Aldrich, Sherron Collins has drilled a pair of threes to give Kansas its early lead.
The refs have let a lot of things go so far, which is annoying the fans but makes for a much more entertaining game. Just let the boys play.
2:30 p.m.
Prediction time.
Kansas has a 36-game winning streak at Allen Fieldhouse for a reason and it's going to take more than a mediocre Oklahoma State squad to come in and take it.
The Jays are a 12-point foavorite today and they'll struggle to cover that, but a 10-point victory should be pretty easy. Look for Kansas to win today 78-68.
2:20 p.m.
Oklahoma State sixth man Keiton Page is even smaller in person, and that's saying something.
The freshman is listed at 5-foot-10 and 168 pounds. That may be accurate, but the juxtaposition of this little kid amongst big athletes makes Page look like a seventh-grader.
Oklahoma State is small anyway — the tallest starter is 6-foot-6 Marshall Moses — and the fact that a kid that small could play significant minutes just tells you where this team is at right now.
2:00 p.m.
In last year's meeting between these two, Oklahoma State won the game but Kansas learned a lesson and proceeded to win the national championship.
At Thursday's press conference, Kansas coach Bill Self adamantly stated that without that loss his team wouldn't have won the title. Self said the Jayhawks learned more in that loss than they ever could have in victory.
With that said, Self still doesn't like learning those kinds of lessons and I doubt it would have the same kind of effect this time around.
The Jays have already learned a lot from their four losses, as evidenced by a 7-0 start in league play.
Obviously Kansas plays better at home than on the road, where all four of its losses came, so don't expect Self to break out any lesson plans today.
