Good for you, bad for you: Eating raw cookie dough

A fine combination of textures and flavors tempts us to taste raw cookie dough. Some people like to eat dough more than its baked counterpart.

Cookie dough containing raw eggs carries the risk of a salmonella infection, says Bill Picking, professor of molecular biosciences. Salmonella infection can cause stomachaches, diarrhea and cramps. The risk of getting salmonella from uncooked dough is low, Picking says, but if young children or the elderly get infected, the symptoms can be severe.

Unbaked goodness: As delicious as raw cookie dough can be, a risk of salmonella infection can leave a bad taste in your mouth.

But what about cookie dough ice cream? Picking says such ice cream sold in a store usually uses pasteurized eggs, so the chance of getting salmonella is much lower than eating homemade cookie dough.

This is just plain silliness. If humans were that prone to "germs" there would not be six billion of us on the planet. Only certain middle class people who have bought Madison Avenues sales pitches go out and buy million of dollars of products to kill "germs".

Salmonella is serious. The complications can be devastating for certain segments of the population. (Remember, peanut butter was supposed to be safe.)

Eggs, an animal product, should be handled carefully as they do carry risk.

Pasteurized shell eggs are an option for those who love to eat cookie dough.

If eating cookie dough were dangerous, I would have died years ago.

My great-grandmother used to tell my mother that she would get WORMS if she ate cookie dough.

However, when my great-grandmother was around, they didn't sell cookie dough in stores. She made hers homemade...she also didn't have running water. And I think she told that to my mom to keep her from sneaking the cookie dough.

We now live in a time where if you WASH YOUR HANDS you'll be 'okie dokie'. So, buy cookie dough from stores, eat it raw. You'll be OK. Pasteurized eggs are amaz-za-zing and make it perfectly acceptable to eat raw cookie dough.

VERDICT: Good for you to indulge every now and then.

What are the chances of contraction? 1 in 10,000? 1 in 100,000? Yes, raw eggs pose the risk of salmonella, just like ibuprofen has potential side effects of rash, nausea, constipation and diarrhea, among others. This article will definitely not deter me from putting a raw egg in my protein shakes or eating uncooked brownie/cookie dough.
