The Kansas governor’s position may soon be vacant if rumors are true that Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is Obama’s top pick for Secretary of Health and Human Services.
The New York Times and CNN reported that unnamed Obama advisers said Sebelius was a likely candidate.
Alex Herman, Hays second-year law student, interns for Rep. Eber Phelps (D-District 111) and said the mood in Topeka was tense.
“It seems like everyone’s on edge waiting to see what’s going to happen,” Herman said, adding that losing Sebelius would shift the balance between the Republican and Democratic parties.
Sebelius had announced in November she would deny any Cabinet positions and would put Kansas’ budget crisis first. The legislature was at a standstill on the budget debating over budget cuts on education.
The budget stalmate between Sebelius and Republican legislators ended Tuesday when Sebelius signed the 2009 fiscal year bill with a $300 million deficit reduction.
Herman said without Sebelius to tip the scale, the House would be in Republican control.
