Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and legislative leaders Wednesday approved the redistribution of $225 million into the state’s main bank account during a meeting of the State Finance Council. The move allowed the state to officially resume paying income tax refunds and meet the payroll deadline for state workers this week.
Students and faculty alike said they were relieved the legislature had reached a compromise.
“I was really worried on Monday,” said Megan Oliver, Overland Park freshman who works on campus. “I kind of freaked out because I’m already a college student and it’s tough in these economic times.”
Despite the state’s budget problems, The New York Times reported Wednesday that advisers saw Gov. Sebelius as the top pick for secretary of health and human services.
