Video: The Depression and today
Was born in 1934; therefore, I have only a childhood recollection of the depression. My dad had a steady $35.00 a week job during that horrible decade in our history. Even with a 10% pay cut he had to take in 1938, we were looked upon as fortunate, being able to live in our own house in a good neighborhood and having a late model car to drive.
Fast forward 70 years later to the present day. My investment portfolio has taken a sizeable 6 figure hit in the current market meltdown coupled with a nearly $20,000 a year loss in dividend income. Nevertheless, I own a $200,000 house in a nice neighborhood "free & clear" am otherwise weathering this 2009 version of "hard times" in an even better fashion than my parents did in the Great Depression. Now, if only my son, with his newly-minted MBA could get work commensurate with this hard-earned degree!!
