Chancellor search on tight schedule

The University of Kansas is one of three universities within the Kansas Board of Regents system currently searching for replacement chancellors or presidents.

Donna Shank, Regents chair, said Regents planned to choose a new KU chancellor by the fall of 2009. Regents plan to hire new presidents for Kansas State University and Pittsburg State University by this spring, almost a year after the searches began.

The University’s search period will be much shorter than the search periods of the other two universities. Shank said that because the University had multiple campuses, and schools of medicine and law, the expedited search was necessary.

“All searches are different and we will need to see how this one progresses,” Shank said.

Because the KU search is on a tighter deadline, Shank said it might be necessary to hire an interim chancellor.

Shank said the regents would name a chair for the search committee. After a chair is selected, a committee representing the needs of the University, the Lawrence community and the state will be selected.

The search committee will then hire a firm, experienced in large university searches, to conduct a national search with the goal of naming a new chancellor by the fall.
