LIVE UPDATES: Michigan State 75, Kansas 62

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Give an experienced and talented team like the Spartans are 19-point lead at halftime and they aren’t going to relinquish it.

That’s what Kansas learned in a 75-62 defeat at Breslin Center. The Jayhawks played one of their better halves of basketball in the second half, outscoring Michigan State 44-38.

It was all too late, though. Behind 13 of Kalin Lucas’ 20 points, Michigan State dominated in the first half and led 37-18 at the break.

Sherron Collins gave the Jayhawks hope in the second half by scoring 20 of his game-high 25 points. They cut the score to as low as nine points before Michigan State sophomore guard Chris Allen hit a three-pointer to seal the victory.

Sophomore center Cole Aldrich compiled yet another double-double with 14 points and 11 assists. Sophomore guard Tyrel Reed – not “Tyler” as the public address announcer called him – contributed 10 points including two momentum-swinging three-pointers.

Kansas, however, will leave the North and the winter storm with its fourth loss of the season. The Jayhawks play next Tuesday night against Kansas State at Allen Fieldhouse.

Check back to Kansan.com for a full story tonight.

******

EAST LANSING, Mich. — With four minutes remaining, Kansas at least has a chance to pull off a shocker.

Kansas has cut the Michigan State lead to 61-50, the lowest its been since midway through the first half. Sherron Collins has scored 18 points to pace the Jayhawks and Tyrel Reed has connected on two recent three-pointers to spark life into the comeback attempt.

******

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Don’t tell Sherron Collins it’s impossible to come back from a 19-point halftime deficit at Breslin Center.

Collins is single-handedly trying to do it by carrying the Jayhawks. Although he’s scored 10 points in the second half and momentarily got it down to 12 points, Kansas still trails 52-35 about midway through the final 20 minutes.

After Collins made two free-throws with 17 minutes remaining, the Jayhawks hopes didn’t sound so far-fetched at 39-27. But Michigan State guard Travis Walton answered with two layups in a 6-0 Michigan State run.

Each of the Morris twins has contributed two points and Brady Morningstar added a three-pointer, but a chance at victory is still a long-shot at best.

******

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Kansas coach Bill Self can take solace in the fact that he’s tried everything.

In the disastrous first half at Breslin Center where Michigan State leads 37-18, Self played 12 different players. Junior guard Tyrone Appleton, senior center Matt Kleinmann and freshman forward Quintrell Thomas – three players who didn’t even appear in Kansas’ last game – were on the court together during a stretch.

In the final 15 minutes of the half, Kansas made three field goals. The Jayhawks are shooting 36 percent from the floor and sophomore center Cole Aldrich is the only player who has done anything positive.

Aldrich has nine points, three rebounds and two blocks, but he even missed two easy dunks during the Jayhawks’ 20 minutes of terror. In retrospect, the 19-point deficit might make it look like Kansas has played better than it has.

Michigan State point guard Kalin Lucas is out-classing Sherron Collins and has 13 points. Forward Raymar Morgan, Michigan State’s leading scorer this season, has eight points and five rebounds.

Kansas squandered its last two opportunities to score as Collins and freshman guard Travis Releford combined to miss four free-throws.

******

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Spartans are bloodying the Jayhawks.

Literally. Sherron Collins left the game after a Michigan State player gave him a bloody nose while scrapping for a loose ball. Collins checked back in after the bleeding stopped.

Unfortunately for the Jayhawks, he hasn’t stopped their bleeding. Michigan State leads 21-12 after yet another three-pointer from Kalin Lucas.

Lucas has 11 points and three three-pointers and has also bothered whoever he guards on the defensive end.

*******

EAST LANSING, Mich. — So much for the hot start.

Michigan State is on an 8-0 run and Kansas trails 14-11 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. The Spartan defense is clearly getting to the Jayhawks as their last two possessions have ended in turnovers.

Meanwhile, Michigan State is receiving contributions from a number of players. Reserve guard Durrell Summers threw down an alley-oop moments ago and freshman stud Delvon Roe added a put-back on the previous possession.

Kansas hasn’t scored since Cole Aldrich hit a jumper four minutes ago.

*******

EAST LANSING, Mich. — If Michigan State coach Tom Izzo wants to force Kansas to play a sloppy game, he’s getting his wish so far.

Kansas leads Michigan State 11-9 after five minutes of play, but it hasn’t been picturesque. Sophomore center Cole Aldrich has four points, but the Spartans have played him physical below the basket and forced three missed shots.

The most notable came on an alley-oop attempt from junior guard Sherron Collins. Defensively, Collins is not winning the battle against Michigan State point guard Kalin Lucas.

Lucas has eight points and two three-pointers. Adding to the physicality of the game, a referee had to separate and talk to Kansas freshman forward Markieff Morris and Michigan State freshman guard Delvon Roe less than two minutes into the game.
