Kansas Basketball vs. Texas A&M
A photo gallery of the men's basketball game against Texas A&M Monday night.
KANSAS 73, TEXAS A&M 53
Game Over
Kansas opened the game on fire and never cooled off. Oppositely, Texas Aamp;M never looked like it knew what to do and turned the ball over constantly.
That was the Aggies biggest problem all night. Maybe they could have hung with the Jays, but without the ball it's pretty hard to score.
Check back to Kansan.com later tonight for full coverage of tonight's game, including another brilliant "Blog" Allen post from Case Keefer. That's all folks.
KANSAS 56, TEXAS A&M 32
11:43 left in the second half
Kansas continues to pile it on and Texas Aamp;M seems content in its embarrassment.
Put simply, the Aggies aren't playing well enough to beat a top-level high school team, let alone Kansas on its home court.
KANSAS 48, TEXAS A&M 27
15:59 left in the second half
Just more of the same to start the second half. Kansas is doing whatever it wants offensively, while Texas A&M can't find any kind of rhythm.
Coming out of the break, the fieldhouse rocked Archie Eversole's 2002 hit "We Ready." Clearly, the Aggies weren't ready for this match-up.
KANSAS 40, TEXAS A&M 23
Halftime
14 turnovers tell the first half story for Texas A&M. The Aggies simply couldn't hang on to the ball, and as a result they took nine fewer shots.
A&M is hanging with Kansas on the boards and hit 40 percent of its shots, but anytime you give away that many possessions it's hard to stay close. Especially with the Jayhawks hitting shots at a 60 percent clip.
In the second half, look for the Aggies to work the ball inside a bit more in hopes of getting Cole Aldrich in foul trouble. Without that, the Aggies don't have much chance of getting back into this game.
KANSAS 35, TEXAS A&M 15
3:51 left in the first half
Turnovers, giveaways, coughing it up...just don't call them takeaways.
Texas A&M continues to throw the ball away and waste any chance of a comeback one possession at a time. Collins is hitting shots at his usual clip, while Little and Taylor are each 4-of-4 from the floor. If the Aggies don't at least cut into the lead before halftime, then they might as well stay in the locker room.
KANSAS 29, TEXAS A&M 10
7:41 left in the first half
Mario Little has found his shooting touch, which is a scary thought for the rest of the Big 12.
Since his return from injury against Kansas State, Little said he still didn't feel natural when shooting jump shots. Tonight he's hit a layup, a mid-range jumper and a three-pointer. If his form holds, then Little may finally play 20 minutes and finally test his strength and health.
KANSAS 20, TEXAS A&M 6
11:41 left in the first half
If Texas A&M could stay on its feet and stop traveling, then maybe we could have a game.
The Aggies already have at least four traveling violations, and they're falling down and dropping passes for no apparent reason.
Turg needs to get his players to calm down and work their offense through the post. The Aggies have a small size advantage down low, but they're turning the ball over before they get a chance to exploit it.
KANSAS 12, TEXAS A&M 4
15:51 left in the first half
Two three-pointers and two forced turnovers are as good as it gets to start a game.
That's exactly what Kansas came out with. The Jays controlled the tip and Sherron Collins drilled a trey. After forcing a traveling violation late in the shot clock, Collins came back with another three. The Aggies rounded out the first four possessions by stepping out of bounds.
I wouldn't say that the crowd has affected the Aggies' play. It's just that the Jayhawks came out ready to play and Turg's boys did not.
8:05 p.m.
Prediction time.
This one, much like Saturday's game at Colorado, will probably be an ugly, grind-it-out game. Kansas will have a few big plays, but A&M can hang with them athletically.
If Cole Aldrich gets in foul trouble, then advantage Aggies. If not, then look for Kansas to win by single digits. I like a 79-70 final score, with Kansas pulling away towards the end.
7:45 p.m.
The last time Kansas lost in Allen Fieldhouse was on a blistery Saturday night in 2007, when Texas A&M, led by Acie Law IV, came in won on a buzzer beater.
A lot of the players, and even A&M's coach, are different, but you can bet that the Aggies who are still around from that game were explaining to the younger ones that it's not impossible to go to Lawrence and win.
The environment isn't and easy thing to get used to, but A&M is about equal in talent level. Add the streak-busting quotient and a coach who played his basketball in crimson and blue, and I think that this Aggie squad will fare better than any other evenly-matched Big 12 team that comes to the Phog.
7:30 p.m.
No one needed to show Aggie coach Mark Turgeon around the gym when his team arrived for tonight's game. Turg is plenty familiar with Allen Fieldhouse, and the entire state of Kansas for that matter.
Turgeon graduated from Hayden High School in Topeka before playing at Kansas for four years. After that he was a KU assistant coach for five years. Then he bounced around the NBA and college before landing at Wichita State in 2000.
Turgeon coached there for eight years, taking the Shockers to the Sweet Sixteen in 2006. This is his first game at Allen Fieldhouse since taking over in College Station, and it will be interesting to see if he lets himself get lost in the environment at all. He's got plenty of memories here, but I'm guessing that he's more focused on creating another one tonight.
7 p.m.
Hello and welcome from Allen Fieldhouse. We're back from Colorado, thankfully, and now it's time for a Big Monday match-up against Texas A&M.
Ron Franklin and Fran Fraschilla are in the house to call the game, as is Holly Rowe, who will patrol the sidelines. One thing I'm sure that they will discuss is the recent allegations of recruiting violations levied against coach Bill Self.
Self said "Good game" to recruit John Wall, the No. 1 rated recruit according to Rivals.com. Coaches are not supposed to speak to recruits, so even something that small is considered a violation. In the grand scheme of things it probably won't matter, but Self still shouldn't have said anything, especially with a reporter within ear shot.
Moving on, tonight's game has a couple of interesting storylines: Mark Turgeon's return to the Phog and the Aggies trying to end another long KU winning streak. I'll discuss both of those more in a little bit. For now, I'll just remind you to keep checking Kansan.com throughout the game for updates and photos. Then come back later tonight and tomorrow for full coverage, including stories, blogs and much more.
Enjoy the game.
