The meeting was designed to answer public concerns over the fiscal health of the University during the ongoing financial downturn.

Chancellor Robert Hemenway, center, addresses a small crowd in Alderson Auditorium Friday afternoon before discussing options available to the University for weathering the current fiscal crisis. The University recently announced that at eleven positions will be terminated and more than 100 positions will remain unfilled for the foreseeable future.

One hundred twenty five faculty and staff attended a legislative forum Friday to discuss the state’s budget crisis and its impact on the University. Chancellor Robert Hemenway hosted the event with other university leaders.

State legislators are projecting an $8.4 million cut in state funding this year along with an expected $19.2 million cut for fiscal year 2010. Theresa Gordzica, chief financial officer for the University, said the legislature entered this fiscal year with a $300 million budget gap with the hope that the economy would improve and solve some of the problem. She said nobody could have predicted the current economic crisis.

The University has already taken actions to reduce its budget by laying off employees, leaving vacant positions unfilled and reducing funding for student jobs.

Cuts to the operating budget have been made by reducing spending for travel, repairs and technology. They have also been made by reducing spending for office equipment and supplies and by turning down thermostats. Hemenway said the University was also undergoing an efficiency audit to eliminate unnecessary or inefficient programs and practices.

Faculty and staff at the KU Medical Center, Edwards Campus and School of Medicine branch in Wichita observed the forum online.

And when will the UDK investigate to find out what the 110 "vacant" positions are? We know about Lori Pearson. Who else has had his/her job eliminated? What about Hemenway's position after he leaves in the summer?
