Brown: Envision coalition could unite campus community

For several months now the word on everyone’s lips has been “change.” Much-needed and highly anticipated change finally began to take place last Tuesday when our new president was sworn into office. Our nation needs a positive change, but so does our local community at the university.

Currently the campus community seems to operate independently, without much connection between student groups. Each group works separately in its attempts to reach specific goals. Student Senate and other student groups rarely connect, except to exchange funding plans.

Just as branches of a government or departments of a company must work together to achieve the best possible outcome, so must campus groups and initiatives. Student Senate should take an active role in students’ lives, rather than functioning as a presence only during elections or when other groups need funding.

A new coalition, Envision, has expressed similar goals of connecting campus life as well as making more students involved and aware of the Student Senate processes. Envision will compete against United Students and Students of Liberty in the upcoming Student Senate elections. This new coalition is comprised of several students from different coalitions coming together to reach a common goal. Just as a new president with a new plan for the country can instill hope in a nation, a new coalition with a fresh perspective can instill hope in a campus system once surrounded by bitterness.

However, all campaigns are filled with good ideas and plans to make lives better. The difficult part of any political process is implementation. Envision seems to be different, a breath of fresh air, but change is an ongoing process and we all should ask if this coalition will follow through.

The University will be facing many great challenges in the coming months. An 18-member selection committee has set high standards in the search for a new chancellor, who must benefit not only the University but also the Lawrence community. The University will also be dealing with decreasing budgets and the ongoing struggle to do more with less. Campus groups must work together to face these upcoming problems, and students will need to feel connectivity and a sense of stability.

Envision could bring the change Student Senate and campus life desperately need. Envision could be the missing puzzle piece to connect students to their senators and smaller groups to the larger picture. Hopefully this new coalition will live up to these standards and not become another lost idea among campaign platforms and promises.

Um, I really enjoy...

href=http://www.shoplet.com/office/limages/GEP19880_1_1.JPG

...that picture. And it basically sums up my view of what envision could be used for.

I'm having deja vous.

Didn't we hear this exact same meaningless crap out of "ConnectKU"? Come to think of it, the word "connect" was mentioned 5 times in this article..... very telling.

Attn: Kansan,

If you weren't as obvious in your biased coverage of Student Senate, maybe people would take your endorsements seriously.

Don't we hear this type of empty rhetoric every year? Yes.

Envision is a joke.

man hawks101 were you just waiting for this story to post so you could put up a negative comment, just like last year, i can see from your post history, at least shutchins11 is a new name, so are you guys gonna bash every envision article? im sure oldgoldlegs will be on here soon defending them.

but i do agree, this article does not give much information about what envision wants to do, or how they plan on doing it, it does not even mention who their candidates are, come on kansan.

and guess who is not excited to see a battle of nasty comments on kansan.com? me and everyone else, so dont waste your time cuz no one cares.

Really, shutchins11? If you're going to attack Envision, at least give a few reasons why students shouldn't support them. Saying they're a "joke" isn't enough to change our minds.

With experienced and passionate leaders, Envision will not only bring unity between student groups but they will also bring change to the KU campus. One of their main objectives is to introduce a more greener lifestyle on campus which could potentially save the university millions of dollars in this economic crisis.

And a note to everyone else who comments: remember to have a point to your comment.

I did give a reason: Their rhetoric is tired, old and meaningless.

Experienced?? Their presidential candidate has never actually been elected to senate and has been in the organization less than a year...

To Envision: You are not Barack Obama.

I'm glad I'm popular enough that I'm expected to show.

To throw a curveball-- this article is crap. There is zero substance. I mean, I'm pretty much "United Students is the devil", but if you're gonna prop up the other guy, at least have a reason.

Students should be ashamed of the leaders they've allowed to take over. KU Student governance is a gift-- student at KU are so much more empowered than at other schools with our voting privileges and vast budgetary oversight. Too bad fewer and fewer care to make certain the stewards of these gifts are anyone worth caring about. The street runs both ways as to fault in this calamity. Hopefully someone changes that.

Not much substance in the article, but the ample use of the word "connect" is fantastic.

Hawks101 - what meaningless crap did we hear from ConnectKU? We have followed through on a lot of what we said we would. KUpedia is still running and still expanding, The Potter Lake Project is a month away from producing its final recommendations, Katy has made progress on Shenk fields, GMail was stopped because United Students vetoed it, and I am working on language for a "have a say before you pay" bill. You can see all of our initiatives here: http://tinyurl.com/connectku

I'd say that's pretty good for not winning the presidency. United Students has a paid executive staff with on-campus offices, and all you have come up with is selling out the student body to build a new pool for Athletics. (What's wrong with the one in Robinson again? It's certainly fine for students who want to use it to swim laps.)

let the games begin!

I love the kansan during campaign season, it's always great to get on here and read the articles, then read the comments as hawks101 and company battle it out. Certainly more entertaining than the articles they post on the Kansan sometimes.

that being said...this article lacks some real key points. It would have been nice to hear how or why Envision will bridge people at the university and bring them together, not just that Envision was going to do it.

Question for Hawks 101- When I come back here in 5 or 6 years to watch my little brother walk down the hill, can I go swimming in the new pool? Or what about when he comes back 5-10 years after he graduates, will he be able to swim in the pool he paid for?

Sjschlag,

It might be worth your time to research how the rec currently compensates those who contributed while they were at the university all while the rec was being constructed.

Otherwise, making comments like that make you sound goofy.

Csommerville:

You are correct. I should have provided a link. Not sure how this is relevant to the article we're commenting on, but sjschlag seems a bit uninformed. Hopefully this will help him out:

http://www.recreation.ku.edu/~recserv/membership/students.shtml#former

Former students who paid the Required Campus Fee anytime during the time frame of Fall 1998 and Summer 2003 are eligible for membership. These individuals will receive access (i.e. membership at no cost) for each semester they were enrolled at the KU - Lawrence campus and paid the Required Campus Fee during the aforementioned time period. Verification must occur before the KU Photo ID or SRFC Photo ID is activated. Membership cards and enrollment verification are available in the SRFC Administrative Office 103. At times verification of past enrollment information may not be immediate. Memberships must be reactivated for each semester of intended use. Former student semesters are non-transferable.

Oh, joy. Talking about the pool again. I never understood the point of having a new, outdoor pool at KU. Has anyone noticed that we live in Kansas? At best, we could use it 5 months out of the year. Waste of money!

That's what United Students has been really good at. Wasting money. That's what the university as a whole has been good at. Say what you want to about Adam Wood but Students of Liberty has it right. It's time to stop throwing KU's money away.
