University mourns death of another student

Antonio Mateos, Lawrence junior, died June 27 in Jefferson County.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff L. Herrig confirmed Mateos had committed suicide by firearm.

A press release issued by the University said Mateos was a junior majoring in business and was on the fall 2007 University honor roll.

In the same statement, former Chancellor Robert Hemenway said “On behalf of the KU community, I offer deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Antonio Mateos. Our hearts go out to them at this time of tragic loss.”

William Fuerst, dean of the School of Business, offered the following statement:

“The School of Business is saddened to learn of Antonio’s passing. He was committed to his studies while also working full time. We join everyone at KU in expressing our sincerest condolences to Antonio’s family and friends.”
