Sections of Naismith Drive closed

Lisa Patterson, communications manager for the city of Lawrence, said that in mid-July, the southbound lanes of Naismith Drive just north of 23rd Street would close while a concrete intersection is built.

Naismith Drive will be under construction for the next five weeks to replace curbs, driveway approaches and storm inlets, and to place new pavement.

Work began July 8 when contractors started replacing curbs on one southbound lane between 18th and 23rd streets. A northbound lane will also undergo construction for new curbs and paving.

“The idea is that there will be a very short inconvenience followed by much better roads,” Patterson said.

Patterson said she expected the construction to be completed by August 14, weather permitting.

So far this summer, construction projects have finished earlier than anticipated thanks to good weather and fast progress, Patterson said. No construction project has exceeded the work days allocated for it, she said, however it cannot be said that the construction is ahead or behind schedule until all the work is complete.

“We are very sensitive to traffic caused by students and the routes that people use,” Patterson said. “That is why we work with a time schedule.”
