Three University graduates were recognized with awards in the 49th annual Hearst National Championship, which took place from June 2 to June 6 in San Francisco.
Mark Dent, 2009 graduate, placed second in the Hearst National Writing Championship and received a $4,000 scholarship. Rustin Dodd, 2009 graduate, placed third in the competition and received a $3,000 scholarship.
Matt Erickson, 2009 graduate, was a finalist in the writing championship and received a $1,500 scholarship. He was also awarded the Best Reporting Technique and received a $1,000 scholarship for his article “Facing the music,” an article about students who were sued for pirating music, published in the April 30, 2008 edition of the University Daily Kansan.
Those chosen to compete in the Championship were winners from the monthly Hearst competitions. Dent placed third in the Personality/Profile competition for his article “Nowhere to run,” which ran in the April 25, 2008 edition of The Kansan and fifth in the Sports Writing competition for “Athletes with children,” which ran in the January 23, 2008 edition of The Kansan. Dodd qualified by taking first in the Sports Writing competition for his article “For the love of the game,” which ran in the April 28, 2008 edition of The Kansan.
The competition required contestants to cover on-the-spot news assignments. A panel of media professionals judged these assignments as well as the monthly competitions.
Dodd said participating in the championship was a great experience.
“It was really a big honor,” Dodd said. “There were students from all over the country and it was really nice to see a few people from Kansas both place in the top three.”
Dodd said he had no plans for his scholarship yet. Dent said he would use his scholarship for graduate school in the future.
