Robert Frederick, former athletics director at the University, was flown by air ambulance to a hospital in Kansas City, Kan., after he fell from his bicycle near Sixth Street and Kasold Drive at approximately 6:45 p.m. Thursday evening.
Lawrence Police Sgt. Mark Warren said a caller advised authorities that Frederick was “having a seizure” after hitting a pothole and falling over the handlebars of his bicycle. Warren added that the appearance of a seizure was possibly the result of the fall from the bicycle.
Warren said Frederick, 69, was wearing a helmet. Frederick had been riding with another cyclist north on Kasold Drive at the time of the accident. According to the School of Education’s Web site, Frederick served as athletics director from 1987 until 2001, when he began teaching at the University. Kansan.com will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
