The Ironman 70.3 series makes its way to Lawrence this weekend, where 2,000 competitors will swim, bike and run a total of 70.3 miles. The triathlon begins with a dive into Clinton Lake at 6:30 a.m. Sunday. Among the competitors are two University of Kansas students — Ryan Saxton, McLouth junior; and John McGreevy, Wichita junior.
“I’m really excited about the race. Not as prepared as I’d hope, but I’ll be ready,” Saxton said.
Other triathletes competing in the race are Ironman world champions Chrissie Wellington and Tim Deboom. The race also has a strong military theme this year, with more than 200 of its triathletes representing various military branches.
Saxton and McGreevy will represent their own group of minorities as college-aged students, competing against the older and experienced professionals.
“I don’t feel like an underdog,” McGreevy said. “I feel like I’m in my prime.” McGreevy competed in last year’s Ironman 70.3 Kansas, and said he hoped to qualify this year for the 70.3 series Ironman World Championships in November.
“It was pretty intimidating last year. I was just happy to finish,” McGreevy said. “But it’s a race for me this year. I am definitely ready to compete.”
