Review: My Sister’s Keeper

Movies about dying children are sometimes hard to stomach, causing people fear and anxiety as if it were their own lives.

“My Sister’s Keeper” lives up to the genre of gut-wrenching dramas, as it tells the story of a young girl named Kate Fitzgerald who is dying of leukemia. The movie’s plot turns the drama into a real life portrait of a family’s struggle, not just focusing on Kate but also on the everyday lives of the people it affects. The plot centers around Anna (Abigail Breslin), who was conceived as a donor baby to save her sister’s life. The beginning of the movie unravels Anna’s struggle to keep her purpose as she goes to a lawyer to have the “rights to her own body”. The character of the mother, Sara Fitzgerald (Cameron Diaz), is the most unlikeable character in the film. With her off-the-wall behavior, and her inability to cope with her daughter’s death, she takes the family through a roller coaster ride of turmoil and heartache.

The different time frames placed throughout the movie allow the viewer to follow Kate’s life, from when she was diagnosed as a baby until her older teen years. If you are a viewer seeking a good cry, and a voyage through a cancer-stricken patient’s life, then “My Sister’s Keeper” will deliver.
