The beatdown of Missouri administered Sunday in Allen Fieldhouse was one of my favorite games ever. In more than 20 years as a basketball season ticket holder, I have been consistently impressed with not only the caliber of our athletes, coaches and entire program, but also with the class and sportsmanship they exhibit, win or lose.
College basketball enthusiasts across the nation herald Jayhawk basketball fans among the best in all athletics. Our zealous love for the Kansas tradition makes The Phog an unsurpassable basketball venue. Players and coaches throughout the country confirm that our fans are simply the best.
As with every top collection of human beings, sometimes a few do not exhibit the high standards of the vast majority. One such misdirected (or inebriated) individual left a small blemish on an otherwise nearly perfect Sunday afternoon, when he chose to scream out during a hushed moment just before a KU free throw in the second half (when MU was clearly vanquished). The booming yell, “Lyons, you suck” was not only classless, it was also stupid.
Leo Lyons is one of the best players (if not the best player) on a formidable Division I NCAA basketball team, which earlier in the season beat us in Columbia. Mr. Lyons does not suck. I venture to guess that the over zealous fan could not score a single point in a game of one-on-one with Mr. Lyons, and probably did not even make his own high-school team (where young people usually learn sportsmanship).
Fans sometimes let passion and zealousness serve as an excuse for “Antler-like” vulgarity or mean-spiritedness. We all need to remind our fellow fans in the stands that behavior like that is not tolerated at the University of Kansas. We promote a raucous, fun, sportsmanlike and very loud atmosphere to cheer on our Hawks. But classless personal attacks are not welcome. It is not what college athletics is all about.
Along those same lines, I hope the folks who chanted “Over-rated!” near the end of the game will reconsider that particular chant. Saying one’s opponent is overrated takes away from our win. It says we’re not to be ranked higher — you’re to be ranked lower. Sure, other schools do it, but aside from sounding whiny (that they shouldn’t have been ranked as high), it’s pretty classless trash-talk. It should disappear from the otherwise rousing (and sometimes funny) student section repertoire.
While I’m at it, I hope the upperclassmen will educate the underclassmen that not every foul call against the Jayhawks is “Bullshit!” Occasionally, we do pick up legitimate fouls. Most experienced fans appreciate that overuse of that particular chant minimizes its effectiveness. Help your less-experienced friends in the stands understand the finer points of the Kansas tradition. Help them class up their act. This is Kansas — the top basketball program in the land.

Guest Column: Student section could work on sportsmanship
Nice editorial, Fritz.
Guest Column: Student section could work on sportsmanship
I completely disagree with that article. This game was against our most hated rival Fritz, maybe YOU need a history lesson on the hatred between KU and Mizzou. As far as I am concerned yelling over-rated is perfectly acceptable, because everyone in the country knew Mizzou was infact over-rated.
As for the "Lyons sucks" that a student yelled... against Missery, fans get a little extra lee-way. Come on, writing a whole paragraph on how Lyons "does not suck" and is a good player, that is ridiculous. I think 98% of KU bball fans know Lyons is good, that is not what that student meant (I am fairly sure of that). Lyons made a foul and someone wanted to rub it in, thats all.
Quit being a cry-baby. Allen fieldhouse didn't lose any respect because of these incidents. You are acting like the student section was yelling racist chants and throwing "pee bombs" at the mizzou bench. Missouri isn't a team that we, as KU fans, need to be 100% polite and cordial to, this is the most heated rivalry in the country as far as I am concerned. Did you not figure that out when you were enrolled at KU?

Oh, and the whole comment on the "unsportsmanlike fan" not being able to score a point on Lyons and not making his highschool team... you are probably right. But what does that have to do with ANYTHING? I would bet just about anything that this particular student didn't think he was better than Lyons. Now it seems that you, infact, are the one resorting to personal attacks. A bit hypocritical, don't you think?

Worst. Column. Evar!
You suck, Fritz. What kind of a girly name is that anyways?
Guest Column: Student section could work on sportsmanship
Wow, you wasted time to talk about a lack of sportsmanship with statements like "over-rated" and "you suck?"
Really? A top 25 team gets absolutely drubbed after only beating us by 2 on the road? That's not overrated?
Don't show up to any more games. Better yet - don't watch. You're a terrible fan of KU basketball. One of those grads that asks the student to sit down while in the student section so they can "sit and watch the game." Jesus, you're soft.
Mizzou had thicker skin than you do, schmuck.
Guest Column: Student section could work on sportsmanship
All's fair in love and war. This is the Border War. Let it slide.
And I'd much rather have the student section heckling the opponents than the alumni HECKLING OUR OWN PLAYERS. My few experiences outside of student section have been spoiled by that crappy alumni attitude. Not to mention they don't even have the decency to stand up and cheer.

2008 Grad- this is for you.
Fritz wrote an article on sportsmanship which is obviously something that not just all athletes and coaches need to demonstrate great qualities of, but for the game ot be enjoyed by everyone, it needs to be demonstrated on the behalf of the fans as well. You mention how Missouri was so overrated. I am a Missouri fan through and through. I have very deep respect for Bill Self and your Jayhawks however. Bill Self is 95-6 at home. The Phog isnt an easy place to play. Missouri couldnt sink a shot in the first half, but they scored with your Hawks in the second half. Things might have been different if Missouri would have shot as normal. (80+ points a game average) Look at tonight. Had you not pulled off a tremendous come from behind victory at home yourselves, Kansas would have fallen to Oklahoma without Mr. Griffin. However, in Columbia, Missouri never let Oklahoma take a defining lead, and in the second half they never took a lead at all. Meanwhile, the Hawks drop on the road, just as big as Missouri in Lawrence, to an unranked Texas Tech trying to make a case for the NCAA Tourney. Need I say it in justification, OVERRATED! I dont truly believe this, but because one team suffers a big loss on the road against a BIG 12 opponent, doesnt make them overrated, it makes them uptight and not playing as well as they could. I hope Missouri and Kansas get a rematch in the BIG 12 tourney as it provides good basketball and is a rivalry I love to watch. Dont let your lack of respect blow that away. Missouri has 12 conference wins for the first time in nearly 20 years. They won on the road at Texas and beat Oklahoma and Kansas at home, they are far from overrated. Good luck to your Hawks in the near future, and congrats to Bill Self on another great winning season. It will be interesting to see if him or Mike Anderson can grab the Coach of the Year award and which one will take the BIG 12 Coach of the Year Award home.

Ahh, giant text block of doom. The enter key is your friend!
Also, why do you keep putting BIG in all caps? Weird.
Guest Column: Student section could work on sportsmanship
Mr. Fritz, you need to remember this is a college game, not an alumni game. The reason every basketball fan in the country considers the Phog a cathedral of college basketball is precisely because of those over zealous, raucous fans you’re speaking of. It surely doesn’t have anything to do with the overpriced tickets you pay for and the enthusiasm you give off eating popcorn. I bet you aren’t complaining when the student section is blowing the roof off with noise that often does have actual effect on the game. Remember the OKS game a few years ago, Texas two years ago? We won those games in no small part because our student section made it miserable to play in Allen Field House with the type of enthusiasm you witnessed against Mizzu
