Joseph Steinmetz, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will become the University’s interim provost, effective immediately.
Steinmetz will replace current Provost Richard Lariviere, who will become the next president of the University of Oregon on July 1.
“It’s an interesting time right now with the leadership change that’s going on,” Steinmetz said. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to step up and work on issues here on campus.”
Both Lariviere and Chancellor Robert Hemenway will leave their positions at the University on June 30. Hemenway appointed Steinmetz today in enough time for Steinmetz to work with Lariviere to provide a smooth transition for the University this summer.
“A lot of thought on the chancellor’s part went into this, and I do have the opportunity to work closely with Richard Lariviere,” Steinmetz said. “He and I touched base this morning and we are in the process of meeting. I have the opportunity in the period of time before July 1 to learn what’s going on and get up to speed and up to date. This bodes well for a real smooth transition on July 1.”
Steinmetz has been at the helm of the College since 2006. The College — where nearly half of University students earn their bachelor’s degrees — enrolls nearly 17,000 students, comprises 53 departments and employs more than 1,400 faculty members and graduate teaching assistants.
