Women’s tennis team begins its Big 12 season today, when it plays undefeated Nebraska at 3 p.m. in Lincoln, Neb. The conference competition continues tomorrow against Iowa State at 3:30 p.m. in Ames, Iowa.
The Jayhawks enter conference play with an overall record of 5-5 and sit seventh in the Big 12.
Next weekend: Colorado vs. Kansas March 20 at 2 p.m. Missouri vs. Kansas March 22 at 11 a.m. Both matches are at First Serve, 5200 Clinton Parkway
“The freshmen don’t know really what’s going on yet about conference, but for some of the other players that really know what it takes, it’s more exciting,” assistant coach German Dalmagro said.
Dalmago said he hopes that the excitement will translate into better court play.
“Overall, I think we are not playing bad. It’s just the little things now and then; some things that just didn’t turn our way. But I think we’re moving in the right direction. We’ll definitely find out this weekend,” Dalmagro said.
Last weekend’s two losses showed that the Jayhawks’ singles play is solid, but the doubles play is not quite at the level it needs to be. Dalmagro said that the squad’s recent troubles in doubles are an issue, but not something to worry too much about. He said the team is just trying to define itself.
The KU tennis team has a lifetime record of 22-11 against Nebraska and has won the last two dual matches. The team is 33-1 against Iowa State, winning the last 30 meetings. Last season the Cornhuskers and Cyclones were 5-6 and 0-12, respectively, in conference play.
This season, however, has been a lot brighter for the two schools. With seven returning letterwinners, Nebraska is a ranked team with a record of 9-0, already picking up its first conference win after defeating Iowa State. Iowa State, 7-3, has already won more matches than it did the entire 2008 season.
Dalmagro said that both teams are better than they were last year, but that the Jayhawks are prepared.
Dalmagro said he thinks that past play does not necessarily predict the outcome of future matches.
“Tennis is about who’s better that day. Sometimes history doesn’t really matter. You put it behind and look forward because every team is different each year,” Dalmagro said.
The team’s goals this season is to finish in the top half of the Big 12, something it accomplished in 2008 with a conference record of 5-6. This season will be a lot tougher as the Big 12 currently houses eight ITA ranked teams.
“It’s gonna come down to who is ready that day and who is not, and who’s gonna take it. I hope it’s us,” Dalmagro said.
