OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — While Oklahoma senior Courtney Paris was bulling through whichever Kansas defender got in her way for easy layups on one end of the floor, Kansas junior forward Danielle McCray was trying to drive by two defenders 30 feet from the basket on the other.
As frustrated as Kansas’ post defenders were guarding Paris, the Big 12 Player of the Year, McCray was just as frustrated trying to get a clean look to score. She scored 22 points, but only two came in the opening 12 minutes of the second half when the Sooners pulled away. The Jayhawks fell 76-59 Friday night.
“McCray earned every point she got,” Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale said.
McCray, who averaged 28 points per game in Kansas’ last three games, was able to get open on the wing in the first half occasionally. But when she drove into the paint, Oklahoma, namely Courtney Paris, was waiting. She had 14 points at halftime on 4-of-10 shooting.
In the second half, Oklahoma sophomore guard Danielle Robinson began to double team entry passes to McCray from senior point guard Ivana Catic. McCray said she tried to pass it to the open guard, which often meant she looked back to Catic. But without its leading scorer producing, Kansas’ offense couldn’t keep up and fell behind by double digits.
“We weren’t clicking on offense in the second half,” McCray said.
But it wasn’t as if McCray’s teammates weren’t trying to help. Junior Sade Morris, who ended up with 15 points, said she tried to get into the gaps of the Oklahoma defense and relieve some of the pressure on McCray.
Another factor in McCray’s inability to get a clear lane to the basket or time to get off a shot was the lack of scoring inside the paint, coach Bonnie Henrickson said. Henrickson also pointed to her team’s nine free-throw attempts as an indicator that Kansas couldn’t get the ball in the paint.
The Jayhawks’ two true posts, sophomore Krysten Boogaard and freshman Aishah Sutherland, combined for 16 points but neither could slow Paris or keep the Sooner defense honest.
“We need some post production,” Henrickson said.
But McCray felt most of the issues with Kansas’ inefficient offense stemmed from her. She said she tried to do something different after they started trapping her on the wings.
“I just tried to slow down and make a basket,” McCray said.
