Body Found at Naismith Hall
Photos from outside Naismith Hall where a unidentified male was found dead.
The man found dead in Naismith Hall Friday morning has been identified as Aezra Sky DuttonHurt, an 18-year-old Lawrence Free State High School senior.
"We're deeply saddened to learn of this tragedy and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the DuttonHurt family," Randy Weseman, Lawrence Public Schools superintendent, said in a media release.
DuttonHurt was a member of the school's choir.
The school district is providing counseling services for its students and the University has offered counseling for KU students care of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Todd Cohen, director of University Relations, said Friday.
A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street.
Police responded to a call at 8:26 a.m Friday to Naismith Hall.
Alisa Riddle, Tahlequah, Okla., freshman and resident of Naismith Hall, said two people told the front desk attendant about an unresponsive person early Friday morning.

For the second time in one week, a dead body has been discovered on or near the KU campus. It is the third death in a two-month period, including one at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house and one near Watkins Scholarship Hall.
“By the time I got back from class at 10:30 a.m., everyone knew what had happened,” Riddle said.
The death is the third on or near campus within a two-month span.
“We’re making counseling resources available to those who want it and we’re working with officials,” said Sam Sankovich, general manager of Naismith Hall.
Todd Cohen, director of University Relations, said because Naismith Hall is not part of the Department of Student Housing, the investigation would be conducted by the Lawrence Police Department.

The deceased person is NOT a KU student, and was not in KU housing, yet somehow DenverDad will turn this into a KU needs to ban drinking article post.

Sorry to disappoint you, but this would have been Jason's 20th birthday.
I'll leave it up to other's conclusions if there is something wrong at KU. Three deaths in two months, let alone the drive by shootings. And here I thought Lawrence was a nice sleepy little college town.
We don't know the details on this one. Drive shooting, overdosing, accident, what next??? This does NOT happen on other Universities like this.
There will ALWAYS be people in denile and believe everything is ok, nothing needs to change. Glad I don't live there and none of my other kids will EVER go there. Good luck KU! Rock Chalk Jayhawks! Chalking around the dead bodies!
I feel badly for the students who still go there and I know many will grieve for this person too, as we do today for Jason. Lives shouldn't be ending at this stage in life.

Sorry Mr. Wren, but this event has absolutely nothing to do with your son's death, other than the fact that someone died.
The person who died today was not a KU student and we don't know the cause. So how about you butt out?
Also, your comment on "chalking" is INCREDIBLY offensive. I know you're hurting right now and I'm very sorry for your loss. But KU did not kill your son.

I do appologize to anyone that may have been offended by my remarks.
However, these deaths are VERY offensive and my heart, thoughts and prayers go out to the Hawkins family and who ever this person's family is. It's shocking that so many lives are lost in such a short time. I would hope the deaths are more upsetting than anything I have said.
Again, my deepest appologies to all the families and those that grieve. I'm sorry.

DenverDad,
We understand that you are grieving, but these incident's could happen at ANY school and they DO happen at other schools. I myself live in Oliver Hall, and knew your son and he was great. But you need to stop! Not all Jayhawks are alcoholic's like you have us pegged. This is a great school where some mistakes have been made, but it should not be a reflection on the university rather the poor judgment and horrible accidents that happened to a couple of students. I came to school understanding what alcohol does to my body because of what my PARENTS taught me and I have respect for rules and know my limit's because of what my PARENTS taught me. Not only was the alcohol issue pounded into my head by my PARENTS but again in my k-12 education. By the time we reach this University we ARE adults, not children that need to be watched. Some of us go out and party in excess but the majority of the students at this school know our limits. We are not a school full of alcoholics so stop insulting this community! If you really don't want anything to do with KU, then leave then stop posting on the UDK website.

Before we start educating our students about the dangers of excessive drinking, I believe we need to start educating students about the dangers of overeating. There are some fatass people walking around out there and it makes me want to be anorexic just looking at them.

I can't stand reading some of these comments anymore. The fact that these three deaths have taken place around the KU campus over the past two months is in not a normal occurance. KU is a wonderful university and Lawrence is a great town. As someone who lived in Lawrence my entire life until I graduated from KU last May, I am shocked by all of the things that have happened there in the past couple months, but it doesn't make KU a horrible place.
I myself, and many other people have graduated from KU, yes even members of the "drunken" greek community (I include myself there too) and have gone on to be very successful people and do great things. We all dealt with the same temptations of alcohol, the same peer pressure and wanting to be adults and wanting to fit in. But everyone handles these pressures and these situations differently, and that is where the difference in our fates lies.
KU isn't to blame for any of these deaths. We all live our lives making our own choices. Unfortunately some peoples' choices point them in the wrong direction. More unfortunate is when those choices lead to unnecessary death. But that isn't any school, any fraternity or sorority or any dorm's fault. Everybody makes mistakes, and sometimes the results of those mistakes are unpleasant and tragic. Mr Wren, I'm sorry for your loss, and for the loss of those affected by these tragedies, but enough is enough. The blame game has to stop. I know that I can't understand what you're going through right now, but blaming others for the cause of your pain won't make it go away.
And by the way, I'd like proof that things like this don't happen on other campuses, because tragic accidents happen everywhere. That's life, it's crazy.

OK...LAST POST EVER!! (I can hear the cheers.) FACT: We did talk to Jason about the dangers of excessive drinking. I tried to show him responsible drinking. WE HAD THE TALKS!
FACT: He was booted out of the dorm and we had only days to figure out what to do with him. He was in the middle of the second semester.
FACT: His grades were excellent. He was a great athlete. As far as we knew he had no behavior problems. I asked Ms. Isdell to tell me. She refused to tell me.
FACT: Jason and I visited the Housing Dept on Saturday. They were closed.
FACT: Jason saw as the only solution to the problem he was in was to be an SAE. They offered him rooom and board.
FACT: The SAE contract states that underage drinking is not acceptable in the house.
FACT: I will FOREVER wish we had pulled him instead of let him stay in the frat. But hind sight is 20-20, and given the information I had at the time, it seemed like a temporary solution. I NEVER IMAGINED HE WOULD DIE THERE! And I know he didn't "drink himself to death", it was something he was not trying to do. He drank, but NOT TO DIE!
FACT: Jason was not EVER known to drink alone. We still don't know who drank with him that evening or the circumstances.
FACT: Those that were with him that night OBVIOUSLY did not know the problems with excessive drinking. Now they know all too well.
FACT: Had he been kicked out between semesters, we would have had time to decide what to do. I doubt we would have let him go back had we found out about his behaviors at the dorm.
FACT: We did not have knowledge of this permission form. I would encourage EVERY parent to have it signed by their student, so there is nothing to prevent information getting to them.
FACT: I'm so glad of the stories of people who have put their drink down for good because of this.
FACT: Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. He offers a gift of salvation and life to EVERYONE and Jason accepted it. It didn't make him perfect, but he showed God's love over and over to everyone he knew. We will see Jason again. This time away, compared to eternity, will only be a blip in time.
And that last fact is the fact that matters most. I hope changes are made on this campus because as Ben Franklin once stated, "The definition of insanity is to do the same things repeatedly and expect a different result." And because of that, I'm done posting here as it's worthless and will not change anyone's mind.
Happy Birthday Jason!
Goodbye, Jay, Jason's dad PS. Anyone who continues to be demeaning and insulting without stating who they are, as I have done, is nothing but a coward!

Coming on here and bashing Mr. Wren is disrespectful. He is an angry and grieving man who lost his son. None of us hopefully will ever have to go through that.
What we should be doing is re-directing Mr. Wren's misguided focus on this "alcoholic" university and placing it on personal responsibility. We need to learn from these tragic examples when enough is enough. It's ingrained in our culture that alcohol is bad and therefore "cool" and that's where the problem comes from. No matter how much alcohol education the university could give us, unfortunately we are past the age where those lessons would stick. At this age, to most of us, alcohol education is just redundant because we already know what excessive alcohol can do. Alcohol education must be enforced in the formative years and stressed by parents so that when their children come out into the adult world they understand that actions have consequences. But, even if this does happen the responsibility still lies with the INDIVIDUAL and whether we choose to respect rules and warnings.
If there is any lesson to be taken away from this it is that we as a community need to learn when no means no and how to tell ourselves and others that drinking too much is dangerous.
Thank you, Mr. Wren for bringing up so many important topics that need to be addressed by the INDIVIDUALS in this community. We are a strong community and these tragedies will not be ignored, and hopefully these horrible accidents will stop soon.

Oh boy, my thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Adios DenverDad and take your rude and offensive comments with you. This university did not kill your son. We are sorry for your loss, we've told you that 100 times. But that comment was LOW. I agree with 5ive - way to go back on your word. We DO appreciate you bringing awareness to a drinking problem that takes place ACROSS THE COUNTRY with COLLEGE AGED KIDS. There are a lot of "should haves"/"would haves" and I won't go there because I know it haunts you and your son's friends everyday. Don't call people cowards for wanting to be safe online either.

DenverDad, Your son just passed away and instead of grieving you are arguing with college students. When students go to college some are ready and others are obviously not. It is not the responsibilty of the University to be a parent. It's quite frankly impossible. When students come to college they are now adults and have to make adult decisions and obviously your son was not mature enough to deal with the social pressures at college. I am really sorry for you loss but I don't think these recent deaths have anything to do with the Universities creditability. I am currently a senior and have learned more than i thought possible at KU not only academically but also socially. Again, I am sorry for your loss but the university did not cause your sons death.
Body found in Naismith Hall Friday identified as local high school student
While I don't believe in blaming KU, it's students, or the greek community (which I am a member), I don't think that being offensive and blatantly rude towards Denver Dad is considerate or appropriate, especially on the internet. This man has lost his SON, which is something a parent should never have to experience. This might just be his way of grieving this loss, and he should be granted a little bit of compassion, even if he may not be entirely in the right. Anyone who has lost a loved one should know that most of the time, people grieve in different ways, and DenverDad is trying to cope with losing someone so precious to him. It was a tragedy, what happened to Jason, and could have been prevented, but only by Jason alone. I in no way blame anybody else, but that does not diminish that fact that is shouldn't have happened, and we can in no way comprehend what the Wren family is going to. So what I am saying to the KU students posting on this board, be compassionate! Show some empathy for someone going through an extremely rough time, someone who has lost their son. I mean come on, we all know that most people don't blame KU or its students for what has happened, and we have all witnessed people grieving and being irrational in our lifetime, but let the man grieve however he wants and leave him alone! You make KU and the student body look bad when you strike out again a man who just lost his only son to horrible circumstances, and is just trying to get through the day in any way he can. Pray for him, offer sympathies, but there is no need to be so blatantly rude and disrespectful.
I want to offer my deepest condolences to the Wren family, my prayers and thoughts are with you. It was a tragic loss, and shouldn't have happened. I can't imagine what you must be going through, and I wish you all the best. From what I understand Jason was an awesome guy, and a genuinely good person, and I have no doubt that he is in a better place right now. The same thoughts and prayers go to the Hawkins family, and to anyone who is dealing with loss at this time. God Bless!
Body found in Naismith Hall Friday identified as local high school student
This is disgusting! I can not believe the bashing a grieving father is getting. DenverDad, I am sorry but I know nothing of your situation. I am a Junior at KU raising a son myself and everyday worry about all the what if's. It is a scary world and those that are posting on here don't understand what it is like to be a parent and have the most precious thing in the world taken away from them. KU is a great school and I think there is nothing wrong in showing pride in it, but the behavior on here is not doing anything but hurting the University's image. I am disturbed when I ride the bus on campus and smell the lingering alcohol all around me and nearly vomit from the stench on elevators when I get in with several people who obviously drank the night before. I overhear conversations describing activities that are all to common that I fear one day my own son will participate in regardless of how much effort I have put in to discourage it. The part that really fustrates me is that somehow students that don't show up for class or when they do they are hungover and yet they still manage to pass. How is that possible - wish I knew the secret as I am a boring mom that studies late into the night after tucking my son into bed. The bottom line is no matter how fustrating these senseless deaths are - they happen and will probably continue to happen and there is not a lot that can be done about it. I am fighting back tears right now as I can not imagine the pain you are going through and please disregard the messages above placing blame on the parents. You were there for your son when he needed you and he knew that. I don't believe anyone intends to die from drinking they just don't comprehend how easy it can happen because some people can drink an amazing amount of alcohol and be fine while others can die with alot less. It is senseless and the more drinks the less aware a person is of their current state and what can happen. Please don't put yourself out here because it is only going to cause you more grief. I do not know the particulars of your situation but if there is a legitimate blame on the university then take it up with whatever policy is responsible if that will help you find peace. Perhaps KU should create an informative and interactive class that is a requirement for all students to take that covers the dangers students face when leaving home and going to college. Have it include drinking, drug use (RX and other), stress, depression, financial trouble, dating, trying to make friends, understanding professors language lol! Sounds cheesy but maybe if it were designed by students for students it would make a bigger impact than just another lecture from parents. My prayers are with your family and I hope you find peace.

I wish that Jason's dad knew all of the good changes that have occurred already. Let's respect him please. There are so many positive changes that have come from this sad, sad tragedy. Jason's dad does not realize how many kids cancelled their Spring Break trips because they felt it was disrespectful to go watch kids party. They went home to grieve and reevaluate their lives. There are so many that still feel it is disrespectful to drink beyond social drinking and no longer find drinking 'the thing to do'. It is not realized that some young men have made big changes in their personal lives and have made great strides in relaying to friends, from their own home towns, the importance of safe drinking. It is not realized that some of these young men have siblings that are 'hounding' their own high school age friends to be careful because of what happened to Jason. Even myself...I am very aware now of drinking in front of my high school age kids. I always felt it was OK to drink in front of my kids because I felt it might teach them that moderation was the key. I'm not so sure about that now. I'm putting my foot down now with my underage kids. Please realize that Jason is thought of every day and that he and his father have already changed lives. I hope he is able to find some moments of peace soon, knowing that Jason is aware that his friends are making changes. Knowing that there is a chain reaction of positive changes that can not be measured or seen. My prayers are with Jason, his family, and all of his friends.
Body found in Naismith Hall Friday identified as local high school student
Dear Mr. Wren, Although I did not know your son I have several friends that did. After hearing their stories, I know Jason was a kind hearted individual with all the potential in the world. With that said, he chose to come here, to the great University of Kansas. Knowing that it was his choice to attend school here, there was obviously something that drew him in. Maybe it was the history of our basketball team, or our new found talent in football. Maybe it was the university's outstanding professors and academics that influenced his decision as well. Whatever his reasons, he loved his school. I know that Jason would not want you to say such terrible remarks about something he loved.
Although there have been three terrible and very preventable deaths that have occurred within two months of each other, that is not typical of this university. This school is amazing. I can honestly say I'm proud to be a jayhawk. Since I found out about Jason's deaath, I have prayed for him and your family as well. However, after reading your comments on this website, my respect for you has dwindled immensely. Your only objective here is to bash this school, with a fairly outstanding record. Please do the KU community a favor and stop with your comments. Not only have you offended me, but this entire school. A
Body found in Naismith Hall Friday identified as local high school student
Denver Dad,
I think the vast majority of the campus is looking inwards at their own drinking behaviors as a result of these deaths. I can assure you that changes are being made.
Try to remember what it was like as a college-aged student, and you will likely recall that young-adults are still growing and learning. They will make mistakes, and they will all grow at their own pace.
Your continued bashing of the University and its students on this website only worsens the hurt everyone is experiencing as a result of this difficult problem, including yourself. Grieve with us, not against us. Help us in our efforts to make positive changes on this front.
We are all in this together, and we should all move in a positive direction together in order to make a real change.
Body found in Naismith Hall Friday identified as local high school student
If this is indeed a case of a high school student staying with college aged friends, it just showcases the problems that occur hand-in-hand with alcohol abuse (or any substance); clouded judgment and risky behavior.
Who to go to for help? What are the signs that someone clearly needs help? In this age group, the danger is trying to deal with it rather than turning to a professional. Sometimes it's ignorance/not knowing the dangers, sometimes it's not wanting to tick off a friend by cutting them off or calling authorities, and then there's self-preservation (i.e. will I get in trouble if my underage friend is passed out in my dorm room?)
J Wren's friends were able to recite what he had been drinking that night. If they were keeping mental count, at what point was that count so high they were going to step in? Clouded judgment. Classic peer pressure.
With D Hawkins, does anybody believe he was alone that night? Could someone have prevented him from climbing up the stairs/roof? Risky behavior, clouded judgment, self-preservation.
The campus is a so-called "dry" one, yet that rule is very loosely enforced. KU's reputation as a party school is well deserved. It needs to be just as well known as a "safe" school and that will be a challenge with all the recent sexual assaults and robberies, as well as the drinking. Start by staying off the roofs! Jumping/hanging out on roofs, has been a non-stop source of broken legs, ankles, and head traumas at KU.
It's too much of a job for the campus police, R.A.s and administrators...KU needs more than the safe bus and emergency spots around campus. It's time for students to start looking after students. Neighborhood "watch" groups have been proven to significantly cut down on crime and injuries. Why not an organized "watch" group on each dorm floor? Each frat? Each street in the student ghetto? You all know the "witching hours" when the most accidents and crime will occur. Be visible, ask questions, make the tough calls when it looks like someone is too drunk.
Take responsibility for yourself and others. It really is that simple.

DenverDad needs to redirect his anger somewhere productive; the ljworld and kansan message boards are not the place.
Not everybody at KU over drinks. However, because there is a significant minority that give college students a bad name.
There is no realistic way to change the attitudes of a significant portion of those who drink excessively.
The reason why people are tired of DenverDad and have lost patience with his rants are because his story, while sad, seemed like a lack of communication.
...and that's what grinds my gears.

Mr. Wren,
We know your loss was detrimental but not everything that happens in Lawrence is about you.
FACT: You took your UNDERAGE son to a bar and drank with him... Stop trying to blame people that had nothing to do with anything
FACT: This article is about another grieving family, let them at least maintain there class as you have so obviously not.
FACT: This person may have died from an overdose, may have not. Whatever happened it has nothing to do with you

My heart goes out to Denver Dad. I have huge issues with drug and alcohol abuse on campus. Yes, drinking goes on in colleges, but it is out of control and the adults...parents and administration at KU do not get involved like they should. I realize Naismith is private, but my pet peeve is walk into or hang out at Naismith Hall on any of the floors any evening, any weekend day or night and inhale. Pot smoking is done inside and outside and along with the security guards. Heroin, doesn't surprise me. Ask the honest residents of Naismith they see it, smell it, and know who does it, who has it, who sells it. Ask the staff, they know about it too. And drinking, it is the place to get drunk. Dare go into an elevator on a saturday or sunday morning, puke and urine. How disgusting for such a "private dorm." Does anyone care?

Part 1 of 2
No one needs to lash out at Mr. Wern. Not to keep saying it but really we are KU students and should have much more class then that. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the people who have lost a loved one over the past two months of at this university. These events obviously did not go un-noticed and have drawn A LOT of attention in a negative light towards a University which I love and am a proud student of. Some of the comments you have made Mr. Wern were totally uncalled for and completely disrespectful towards those that attend this place. I am not trying to single you out at all in the following arguments but I know for a fact that when I was moving into student housing 3 years ago they made me AND my parents sign a letter saying we had read the privacy policy. (Which I didn't nor did my father because we all know what it says in the fine print, right?) This turns out NOT to be the case, if you or your son had read it you would understand the terms in which your son and yourself were getting into which INCLUDED privacy terms. I also had a brief stint as a employee of student housing and spend many friday nights "baby sitting" people who drank too much. There is no way as a parent you can think "My son lives in a building with hundreds of other kids but he wont drink." I would imagine that you were once in your late teens and early twentys and did many things just like your son. (i.e. drank underage, drank a bit too much now and then) I also know that people living in the dorm which I was working at had more then one, some more then three and some more then three "write ups" for alcohol related violations. If your son got kicked out of the dorms I am sure he had the chance to be put into another dorm it was not just a "Oh sh*t i am homeless situation." UNLESS there was a major problem. Lastly I am also a former greek and will say that I was not a member of SAE but attended their functions and they were good (What made them good?... Free booze, hot girls and all that other stuff I am sure you were into in college) Their was those who drank excessively but you will find that at ANY university nation wide.

Part 2 of 2 I cant imagine how hard it would be to lose a son, let alone to something that could have been prevented. Things of this nature have reminded me when i go out to get "fcking wasted" to slow my roll and are a real reality btch slap to the face rather then just saying "There is no way this could happen to me or my friends right?" I use it as a chance to remind my self and educate my self on what to be on the look out for. (As I hope others do and should) The university of kansas did not make your son drink. The men of SAE did not make your son pick up the bottle. The students at KU did not make your son get a fake ID. You did not make your son drink. He was an adult and from what i have read about him a extremely fine young man whom I know you were proud of but your son made those decisions on his own and took the risk knowing full well what the consequences might be. DenverDad, I fully support your rite to question the universities policy but I would encourage you to support education versus change because I believe that it is the best weapon to reduce tragedies such as this. Again, my thoughts and prayers (along with im am sure most of the University) go out to you and your family. Rock Chalk! mkozak@ku.edu -Max K

I think the events that have happened the last few months are a tragic coincidence that have sadly occurred very closely together on the calendar. I believe this is a rare period in the University's history, where unfortunately there have been fatal consequences for adult choices. If these events had been spread apart over the course of four years, this would not feel nearly as alarming. My heart goes out to the families and the loved ones of those who have lost, but this is not an epidemic, its a coincidence, a very sad coincidence.

I do have to say that all of the events that have occurred this semester are alarming. Deaths, rapes, drive-by shootings... When does it stop being a coincidence? At some point someone is going to have to step in and make some changes if KU wants to keep its great reputation.
