The Kansas Board of Regents approved a new scholarship for out-of-state students with ties to the University.

The Kansas Board of Regents approved a new scholarship for out-of-state students with ties to the University.

The scholarship can be renewed for four years. Univesity officials are hoping the scholarship will attract more students to KU.

Several state schools across the country have similar generation programs. Legacy programs have put KU at a disadvantage in recruiting out-of-state students.

The scholarship will offer a 12 percent discount on out-of-state tuition to applicants who have a high school GPA of at least 3.25 and an ACT score between 26 and 29. Applicants with higher scores can receive a higher discount. +

I wonder if Xavier Henry and his brother qualify.

This is old-hat elitism. Scholarships are supposed to awarded to achievers, not the children of achievers.

Alums contribute a lot of money to the University. A fund for short-term loans from an alumni fund helped me finish my dissertation. My best friend's kid is taking advantage of this scholarship. He was born in Lawrence when my friend was in grad school, and now lives in Texas. As faculty at a small college, my friend can't afford KU's out-of-state tuition. Even with the 12% reduction, he will pay more than resident students. The Jayhawk nation extends beyond the borders of Kansas. Rock Chalk!
