Not only was Sunday night Senior night for the Kansas Jayhawks, but the team also picked up where it left off on Saturday in big fashion. Kansas dominated Kansas State (17-7) in its last game before both teams compete in the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Since things were going so well for the Jayhawks, the game was called early in the seventh inning.
Kansas jumped on the board in the first inning with right fielder Brian Heere’s double, which allowed short stop David Narodowski to score 1-0. The Wildcats tried to keep the game interesting by tying the game 2-2 in the second inning, with runs scored by third baseman Jason King and first baseman Justin Bloxom. But the Jayhawks fired back in the third inning, scoring seven, runs including a two run homerun courtesy of catcher Buck Afenir. Following Afenir's homerun, the Jayhawks followed up in the fourth inning with another two run homerun from third baseman Tony Thompson. For the second straight game, pitching was a weak point for the Wildcats. As K-State rotated through five different pitchers in Sunday's game, each one allowed at least one earned run.
For the Jayhawks, freshman Lee Ridenhour received his sixth win as a pitcher, going 5 and 2/3 innings and allowed five earned runs. Ridenhour became the second freshman in 15 years at the University to get six wins as a pitcher.
Kansas will head to the Big 12 Tournament as a number five seed and will play K-State again as the number four seed Wednesday.
