Pharmacy school facilities to see expansion

The groundbreaking of a new School of Pharmacy complex was held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lied Center. Sen. Pat Roberts, Chancellor Robert Hemenway and Kenneth Audus, dean of the School of Pharmacy spoke at the event.

The construction, planned to be completed by 2010, will allow more students into the School, Erick Axcell, a pharmacy graduate student, said.

"It will be a little different not being a part of the main campus and all that has to offer with being able to interact with students outside of the Pharmacy school," Axcell said.

Rachel Kormanik, Overland Park pharmacy student said she was considering taking classes in the new facilities when they were built to "finally get out of Malott", which is where the majority of pharmacy classes are offered.

Axcell said with the new complex, the School would be able to more than double its class size, which is now around 100.

"There is a nationwide shortage of pharmacists, and increasing the class size will help with the shortage," Stephanie Peterson, a Pharmacy alum, said.

The school also plans to open a campus in Wichita.
