Football player diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma

Freshman defensive end D.J. Marshall will still travel with team to Kansas State

Freshman defensive end D.J. Marshall has been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma it was announced in a statement yesterday. Marshall informed his coaches and teammates about the diagnosis today. He will undergo more tests before doctors determine a course of treatment, the statement said.

“The prognosis for recovery from Hodgkin lymphoma is good,” head team physician Larry Magee said in the statement. “We are optimistic that D.J. will make a complete recovery. Right now the most important thing is for him to have follow-up tests and then begin treatment.”

Coach Mark Mangino said in the statement that Marshall will remain a part of the football team and that he will travel with Kansas to Kansas State tomorrow.

“As D.J. faces this disease, we know he will do so with great determination,” Mangino said. “Our thoughts and prayers will be with him daily. We look forward to his complete recovery and having him back on the field as soon as possible.”

Marshall, who is from Mesquite, Texas, redshirted last season. Mangino said Marshall wouldn’t practice.

“I am very thankful for the support that I’ve received from my family, my teammates and coaches, and from our medical staff,” Marshall said in the statement. “Coach Mangino is always telling us to “saw wood,” especially when our back is to the wall. I am going to beat this disease with their help and my hard work. I can’t wait to get back on the field.”
