City: Solomon
Location: Mideastern Kansas
Distance from Lawrence: 1 hour 58 minutes or 122.76 miles
Founded: The town was originally established in 1856, called the Buchanan Town Company, but was destroyed by natural causes. The second name, Solomon City, was given after the French settlers named the nearby river Solomon River. It later became Solomon and was a center of activity by 1865.
Population: 1,053
Destinations: The local pool is a popular hang-out for the youth of Solomon. Downtown, there is one bar, The Brick, which is like a family friendly establishment. To do a little grocery shopping visit Bush’s Market. Flat tire? Don’s Tire shop can fix it for you.
Interesting Facts: There is another city in Kansas with its name, Solomon Rapids, Kansas. Canadian politician Kenneth McLeod lived there. The tornado activity in the Solomon area is slightly higher above Kansas’ average; it is 149% greater than the U.S. average.
What was the best part about living in and going to school in Solomon?
Brittnee Catlin, junior: “Everything was in walking or four wheeler distance. I liked being close to Salina and Abilene because that’s where all the shopping was since we didn’t have any shops, let alone a stoplight. Something I’ll never forget is having burn-out contests and parties in the school parking lot. Those were the best!”
Derek Knight, sophomore: “The best part would have to be the obscene amount of crazy fun we had. It was small enough so no one really had rules and we were allowed to just be kids. And we were able to establish really close friendships and make some great memories.”
Mindy Strecker, senior: “It was easy to talk to the teachers because they were always around you and you’d see each one of them at least twice a day. It was easy to get to class. Even if I had one minute till class I could get from one end to another and not be late.”
