Border Showdown time lapse
Kansas entered the 2009 Border Showdown with a six-game losing streak. Needing a win to become bowl-eligible, the Jayhawks led most of the game only to lose on a last-second field goal, 41-39. It was the last game for 15 Kansas seniors.

Kansas Football vs. Missouri
The 2009 Border War, played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., resulted in Kansas' seventh straight Big 12 loss, ending the season with a five and seven record overall. Missouri defeated Kansas 41-39 after a last second field goal from 27 yards.
Kansas City, Mo. In the final game of the season — in Kansas’ last attempt to salvage a year that hasn’t gone as expected — the Jayhawks suffered one final disappointing loss.
This time it was a 41-39 loss at the hands of rival Missouri that featured Kansas letting a lead slip away as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
After senior quarterback Todd Reesing was dropped in his own end zone for a loss with slightly less than three minutes remaining, Missouri marched through Kansas’ defense with relative ease.
Missouri’s Grant Ressel kicked a field goal as the clock displayed three zeros, sending the Tigers pouring onto the field.
Kansas held a 21-13 lead at halftime and played its best offensive game of the season. Reesing passed for a school-record 498 yards while junior wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe caught 14 passes for 242 yards.
Reesing accounted for five touchdowns, leading an offense that hasn’t been effective since a 41-36 victory against Iowa State Oct. 10.
Kansas’ defense, however, struggled to slow a potent Missouri attack.
The Jayhawks finished the season 5-7, eliminating them from postseason play for the first time since Kansas finished 6-6 in 2006.
The last time Kansas finished a season below .500 was in 2004.
Check back later for more postgame highlights and reactions from coach Mark Mangino and Kansas players.

Era ends in Border Showdown loss
And it will all be blamed on Mangino. But if they had won it would have been because they are a stellar team. Gotta love the blame casting when times are down and the glad handing when things are going well.
Era ends in Border Showdown loss
Mangino's KU coaching future appears to parallel the uncertain 2010 return of FSU coach, Bobby Bowden, here in Tallahassee, where I'm now based. Both have enjoyed prior stellar seasons (in Bowden's, case, however, he boasts two NCAA championships and over 350 career wins); however, in this high-risk profession, past achievements can quickly fade if the momentum noticeably slips. Messrs, Mangino & Bowden are living examples of this thesis.
If Mangino wants to continue coaching, he really needs to declare unconditional war on his over-the-top weight problem. He simply sets a poor personal example of making physical fitness a centerpoint of his lifestyle; hardly an individual to be emulated in this critical respect. If I were in the betting business, I'd be hard pressed to give odds on the likelihood of Coach Mangino living beyond age 60 if he continues "as is."
