After a complex chain of events over the past 24 hours, the women's soccer team will have to play an unprecedented play-in game against Texas Tech to earn the eighth and final spot in next week’s Big 12 Tournament.
Kansas, Baylor, and Texas Tech ended the season in a three-way tie after Kansas defeated Missouri 3-2, Colorado defeated Texas Tech 2-0, and Baylor tied Oklahoma 0-0. Initially, the Big 12 ruled that Kansas and Baylor would advance to the tournament after a three-step tiebreaker, because Baylor had the least goals-against from games against the other two teams, and Kansas had defeated Texas Tech in head-to-head competition.
But Saturday afternoon, the conference reconsidered its ruling and instead decided on the play-in game, which will take place Monday at 6 p.m. in San Antonio. The winner will become the No. 8 seed in the tournament and play the No. 1 seed Missouri on Wednesday.
The conference released the following statement regarding the situation:
“In regards to the seeds for the 2009 Big 12 Soccer Championship, the language to break the three-way tie between Baylor, Kansas and Texas Tech is open to interpretation and can be applied in different ways. The coaches and administrators will consider a clearer interpretation of the rule in the offseason.
The resolution is to conduct a play-in game between Kansas and Texas Tech Monday at 6 p.m. at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
The winner of the play-in game will advance to Wednesday's quarterfinal as the No. 8 seed and play No. 1 seed Missouri.”
This is the first time such a play-in game has been used to determine entrance to the Big 12 tournament, according to Kansas Athletics.
