Freshman offensive lineman is quick to admit that he was nervous before the first game of the season against Northern Colorado on Saturday. But he said after the first snap, everything settled back to normal.
“After the first couple of plays you get in a game groove,” Hawkinson said.
Originally recruited as a tight end, Hawkinson moved to defensive line last year before settling in at left tackle before this season. He is now responsible for protecting quarterback Todd Reesing’s blind side.
In the first game of the season, Hawkinson and the rest of the offensive line fared well. The Jayhawks didn’t allow a sack.
Coach Mark Mangino said the young line looked solid for a season opening game.
“Nobody graded outstanding and nobody graded poorly,” Mangino said. “It was a good first night for them.”
