A large, silver SUV was seen crashing into the front of Louise's West, 1307 W. 7th St., this morning between 2:30 and 2:45, according to general manager PJ Mather.
No one was in the building at the time of the accident, and no suspects had been found as of 11 a.m. today. The front of the building is caved in, leaving safe accessibility into the building questionable.
Mather received a phone call from an employee at 3:15 a.m. today informing her about the incident. She spoke with the responding officer, Michael Cobb, who told her a bicyclist saw the SUV hit the front of the building but did not get a license number. She said the crash occurred sometime after the bartender locked up at 2:30 a.m. and before the cleaning crew arrived at 2:45 a.m.
Randall Spiker, teleserve officer with the Lawrence Police Department, said the department could not respond to inquiries about the accident until Monday, when the press officer, Sgt. Bill Cory, returns to the office.
Crown Construction was hired to fix the damage. Owner Paul Crown said repairs could take at least a week, if everything goes well. He said vehicles crashing into buildings happens "quite a bit," but could not speculate as to the cost of repairs.
Although no police statement has been released, bystanders speculated that alcohol was involved, while they shot photos of the caved-in facade with their phones.
Mather said the bar is offering a $1,000 reward for any information on the identity of the person responsible for the damage. People with information should call the Lawrence Police Department at 785-832-7650.
