Watson Library evacuated

Patrons evacuated Watson Library shortly before 1 p.m. Monday when smoke from a broken elevator motor filled the building.

No one was injured and people re-entered the library around 1:35 p.m., said Captain Pat Karlin, acting shift commander with the Lawrence Fire Department. He said the broken motor did not produce a fire.

Kent Miller, associate dean of libraries, said the central elevator stopped between the third and fourth floors.

“The interesting thing is that it didn’t produce enough smoke to set off the alarm,” Miller said. He said someone pulled the alarm to trigger the emergency response.

The only elevator affected by the motor was the center stack, Miller said.

The library is safe and open, however, the central elevator remains inoperable.
