The University Daily Kansan will move its newsroom from Stauffer-Flint Hall to the Dole Human Development Center on Sunnyside Avenue June 21. The Kansan will share a newsroom with the campus TV station KUJH, which will become Kansan TV.

Found in the newsroom: historic issues of The Kansan
While packing the newsroom for the move to the Dole Human Development Center, we came across old photographs, awards and many other things we didn't know we had. This photo gallery highlights several historical issues of The Kansan we found in the process.
“It has been in the process for a long time,” said Malcolm Gibson, general manager and news advisor. “Ultimately, the goal was to bring all of the newsrooms together. In the end it is just easier for us to move than it is for KUJH to move.”
Gibson said one of the key elements in the move is that KUJH has recently made the switch from being faculty-run to student-run. The Kansan has always been student-run, and now that KUJH has made the switch, it will be much easier for the two entities to come together and function under one editor.

Found in the newsroom: photographs
Along with the many issues of The Kansan we found while packing, we also discovered a large collection of photographs, most of which were sports related. We selected several of these images to share in this photo gallery.
“It’s kind of bittersweet,” said editor-in-chief Brianne Pfannenstiel, a senior from Lawrence. “The Stauffer-Flint newsroom has become like a second home for a lot of us, so there’s a lot of sentimentality associated with this move. But at the same time, it’s going to open up a lot of opportunities for journalism students.”
Gibson said that although Stauffer-Flint held sentimental value, the move was a good thing because having KUJH and The Kansan in the same building would allow the students to create a more cohesive product.
“I’m excited about uniting the print side and the video side,” said copy chief and special sections editor Sarah Kelly, a senior from Lawrence. “The Kansan will be a better publication because of this move, but the old newsroom was home. I ate lunch in the newsroom every day. I worked in Stauffer-Flint until 2 or 3 in the morning sometimes. I don’t know if I’ll ever be totally comfortable in Dole.”
Leita Walker, spring 2002 Kansan editor-in-chief, said Stauffer-Flint would always be a place for journalism students.
“The multimedia center in Dole was just starting as I was graduating but I think that this is probably a good thing for The Kansan,” Walker said.
The Kansan advertising staff and Sales and Marketing Advisor Jon Schlitt will also be making the move down to Dole in order to keep the entire production staff of The Kansan in the same workspace.
Parking for Kansan staff will become much more convenient with nearby parking lots, but climbing the stairs from Dole to Stauffer-Flint and the rest of Jayhawk Boulevard will require students to adjust.
“The only real drawback I see is 94 steps. Ninety-four steps up the hill,” Gibson said.
