Food stamp usage increases
The number of households using food stamps increased by over 26 percent in the last year.
More Kansas households are taking advantage of a state program that helps them purchase groceries, according to information recently released by the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.
The number of households taking advantage of the Kansas Food Assistance Program increased by 26.5 percent from January 2008 to January 2009.
Every month food stamps are distributed electronically to program participants via debit cards known as “Vision Cards”. These can then be used to purchase self-prepare food items at grocery stores. Recently, food stamp use has been extended to nine farmer’s markets across the state.
