Turnovers handicapped Kansas Feb. 10 against Nebraska at Allen Fieldhouse and it lost 67-60. Tonight’s story is no different as Nebraska leads 49-32 at halftime.
Kansas has committed 11 turnovers by the break and has been out-rebounded 16-14. Nebraska jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game and hasn’t looked back since. The Cornhuskers recorded a whopping 28 points in the paint, with six players scoring five or more points. Junior guard Dominique Kelley leads Nebraska with 14 points, most of which were scored inside.
Henrickson has already used 10 different players in the first half. Junior guard Rhea Codio got her first career start at Kansas, but struggled early — she eventually found her groove and dished three assists. The most concerning number: freshman forward Carolyn Davis is without a single point in the entire half.
The Cornhuskers are getting the most out of their senior night. They converted 17 of 31 field goals, or 54.8 percent. They also scored 14 points off of turnovers.
For Kansas to have any chance at a comeback, it must get Davis going.
Hats off to ...
— Aishah Sutherland had an up and under the hoop layup that looked much like the classic Julius Erving highlight. She used her incredible athletic ability to tally five points and three rebounds.
— Senior guard Sade Morris played much of the first half with two fouls, without committing a third. She also lit it up with her outside shooting, scoring eight points on four of six from the field. While she has committed a team-high four turnovers, she has been the undeniable senior leader that the team needs on the road.
— After a shaky start, freshman guard Monica Engelman has scored six points creatively. On one play, she pump faked in the air and drew a foul to get herself two free throws.
Player of the half:
Sade Morris: Morris has had the hot hand for the Jayhawks this half as she has eight points on four of six shooting. She did all of that despite picking up two early fouls that limited her playing time.
Play of the half:
5:36: Aishah Sutherland drove the ball down the outside of the lane before winding up underneath the hoop. She then twisted around to the other side of the basket and banked in a spiraling jumper.
Trend of the half:
Free throws: Kansas has kept pace with Nebraska as far as shooting percentage goes. The Cornhuskers, however, have made it the free throw line 11 more times than the Jayhawks and have plus nine point differential at the line.
