Kansas City, Mo. 2nd Half, 2:58 left; Kansas 73, Texas Tech 63
Sorry for the dearth of updates in the second half, the wireless here in the Sprint Center is really dragging.
Anyways, highlight of the game came about 20 minutes ago (I've been trying to upload this since then) in the form of one of the greatest blocks I've ever seen. Mike Singletary went up for a two-handed slam, and Aldrich (who else?) just denied it completely. Came from the side got a full hand on the ball and pinned it against the backboard.
Sherron Collins and Xavier Henry just hit back to back threes to bump the lead to eight.
HALFTIME: Kansas 34, Texas Tech 32
It's been a completely underwhelming half for Kansas, but they still came out on top 34-32. I suppose it's good news for the Jayhawks that they can sleepwalk like this and still be leading, but Self's got to be going insane about the lack of effort. I'm not allowed in the locker room until post game, but even if they let me in I would stay far, far away from that place. I can't imagine it's a happy one right now.
Player of the Half: Cole Aldrich
Good news is that Cole Aldrich is doing to the Texas Tech frontline exactly what he needs to be doing to the Texas Tech frontline. The big fella has seven points and 10 boards. Sherron Collins is also playing well with nine points and two assists. Does it surprise absolutely anyone that those two are playing better than the others in a game like this?
1st Half, 3:36 left; Kansas 28, Texas Tech 28
Even Big Jay looks bored. This has been a going-through-the-motions kind of afternoon for Kansas, and its showing in the score. Kansas beat this same Red Raiders team by 26 earlier this year. Granted, this isn't the Phog, but it is a friendly environment. Kansas is playing with zero energy. In comes Thomas Robinson.
1st Half, 7:45 left; Kansas 25, Texas Tech 17
Collins knocked down a triple then a pair of free throws off a Pat Knight technical. Jayhawks looking alright at the moment, but they should still be running the Red Raiders out of the gym and have, so far at least, failed to do that.
1st Half, 11:41 left; Kansas 14, Texas Tech 13
Kansas is playing some pretty uninspired basketball right now, but like I mentioned pregame, that's not totally stunning. There's nothing on the line for Kansas, and Tech is the only team left in the tournament that could get into the tournament with its play today.
1st Half, 15:27 left; Kansas 10, Texas Tech 9
Marcus Morris hit a three, so this one's really not worth watching anymore. Kansas is 11-0 in his career when he does that, so you can change the channel/recover from the weird illness that kept you from work this morning/start the post game party.
In all seriousness, though, the Kansas bigs have looked pretty solid, starting with a Cole Aldrich and one (and another one on the lane violation) that gave Kansas a 3-0 lead 13 seconds in.
Pregame; 15:00 to tip
It's pretty empty in the Sprint Center right now -- this one won't be a sellout -- but the majority of shirts in the building are blue, believe it or not. Texas Tech is really strong at point guard and small forward Mike Singletary can really fill it up, but beyond that there's just not a lot to get excited about for Texas Tech.
For Kansas, it's well known that they have absolutely nothing on the line but pride right now. Even if they get destroyed today, they'll be on the top line of the bracket when it's announced in just a few days. That's not likely to happen, though. If you're looking for something to keep you entertained while the Jayhawks likely put a hurting on Tech, here are a couple things.
First, watch Sherron Collins. He hasn't been electric lately, but not electric for Collins is still really good for everyone else. If he returns to top form over the next few days, the Jayhawks could be all but unbeatable as the NCAA tournament rolls around. Also, watch the Morrii and Cole Aldrich. They should be able to dominate Tech's frontcourt,
Prediction: Kansas is stronger one through five and on the bench, so sleepwalking through round one probably won't even kill the Jayhawks. Kansas by a landslide, 83-59.
Pregame; 60:00 to tip
Without yet looking at the lineups or game notes (I'll get around to it, but it's midterm week. Hope you understand), here's a few early thoughts on Kansas' quarterfinal matchup with Texas Tech.
First, I'm really surprised that Kansas is even playing the Red Raiders. To me, with Tech riding a seven-game skid and Colorado winning its last three going into Wednesday, it seemed as if Colorado would advance to face off against the top-ranked, top-seeded Jayhawks.
Since it is Tech that Kansas will face off against, the deciding factor will likely be Kansas' inside presence. Texas Tech doesn't have the size to bang with the Jayhawks, as only 6-foot-9 Darko Cohadarevic can match up with the height of Kansas' primary bigs, who stand 6-8, 6-9 and 6-11.
