Coming off of a series victory at LSU, the KU bats were quieted in a 1-0 loss to the Tulane Green Wave.
Tanner Poppe was out pitched by Tulane's Gunner Wright who only needed a Jeremey Schaffer groundout to score the game-winning run in the first inning. From there, Wright cruised and gave up no hits till the seventh inning when Brian Heere singled to right field.
"He pitched an excellent game for them," coach Ritch Price said. "He mixed up his pitches well. He certainly kept us off balanced until we broke through late in the game."
While Wright was the main man for the Green Wave, Tanner Poppe contiuned his success but this time in a losing effort. Poppe pitched 6 innings of work and while giving up 7 hits, he earned two strikeouts.
He went deep into the ball game after it looked like he would be done early. In the third inning, Poppe had two Green Wave runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs and got Jeremy Schaffer to strikeout to end the inning.
"I was very pleased with Tanner Poppe's progress, from where he started at against Arkansas to now, he's getting better and better as the season goes," Price said.
With the score being 1-0 most of the contest, KU had plenty of chances late in the game to make a run at tying the game or getting the lead. In the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, the Jayhawks had runners in scoring posistion and each time they could not come up with anything. In the seventh and ninth, the Jayhawks had the tying run sitting 90 feet away at third base and could not score. In the ninth, Brandon Macias hit a fly ball but was caught by the center fielder to end the game.
"We have two hits, late inning opportunities and had the hitters we needed in those situatons and we come up empty handed, it's disappointing," Price said.
