After the final out was recorded, the Jayhawks lingered in the dugout and on the field as if to savor the final moments of their season.
Kansas’ (31-27-1) entered this season and tournament with high expectations but lost its sixth straight game, 6-3 to Baylor, ending the season on a disappointing note.
“It’s baseball,” senior second baseman Robby Price said. “You can’t really control the outcome.”
The Jayhawks were quickly behind 3-0 after the Bears struck for three runs in the first two innings against freshman Tanner Poppe.
Though Poppe settled down, Kansas could only muster four singles through the first five innings.
Down 6-0, the Jayhawks finally picked it up from the plate.
Kansas rallied for three runs in the sixth on the strength of hits by sophomore Chirs Manship, junior Brandon Macias and Price.
More chances would follow for the Jayhawks, but despite having numerous scoring chances as a result of 12 hits, one walk and one error, they only managed the three runs.
Kansas' hitters made good contact all evening, but often hit it right into the waiting gloves of Baylor’s defense. The Jayhawks left only six runners on base in the game, but grounded into four double plays.
“We had our opportunities and just couldn’t come through when we needed to,” junior third baseman Tony Thompson said.
One such opportunity was particularly glaring.
After cutting the deficit to 6-3 in the sixth, the first two runners had reached in the seventh inning, prompting coach Ritch Price sent freshman Jordan Dreiling to pinch-hit for Manship.
“I was trying to stay out of a double play,” coach Price said.
Dreiling attempted to bunt the runners over and ended up working the count full. But the freshman’s final bunt attempt with two strikes rolled foul – which counts as a strikeout.
“That was probably the biggest out in the whole deal,” Baylor coach Steve Smith.
Macias was next up, and he ripped a ball to short, only to have Baylor turn a double play and quickly end a potential rally by Kansas.
"Those double plays ended up being huge," Smith said.
The Jayhawks held the Bears in check over the final two innings, but weren’t able to mount any significant rally after the seventh.
Kansas' season is now over, with the club falling well short of its goal of competing for a Regional bid.
So, too, are the careers of six seniors, including Robby Price, who recorded multiple hit games in all three contests at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
Price, like many of his Jayhawk teammates, was visibly upset to have fallen short of their collective goal.
But he was unwilling to let that spoil the memories.
“It’s been a great four years. I’ve enjoyed the ride, and enjoyed playing with some great teammates and representing this university,” he said. “It’s been a lot of fun playing for my dad.”
