'Thank God' for the incredible comeback

What Turner Gill said after Kansas’ improbable 52-45 comeback win against Colorado was everything you need to know about the state of this football program.

“I first want to say ‘thank God,’” he said.

One year after being ranked for half the season, this is what has become of Kansas football. Thank God Kansas was able to beat Colorado at home.

A year and 20 days ago, Kansas was ranked 25th in the BCS. Now, a new coach is thankful for beating Colorado at home. Prior to this game, the Jayhawks had won three of the last four games against the team that is now 0-5 in the Big 12 conference this year.

But if you were around Gill after the game, you might have thought the Jayhawks had just won the National Championship.

“We just said we loved each other,” Gill said. “We just all hugged each other. We’re going to continue to move on a little bit and yell and scream and continue to celebrate. This is a great win for our program, and a great win for our players.”

Kansas scored 35 points in the fourth quarter to come back against Colorado. The Jayhawk defense allowed Colorado to score on every possession but one through the third quarter.

“Next week we’re going to have to do the same thing against Nebraska and I feel like this team right now is ready to shock the world,” junior linebacker Steven Johnson said.

The Jayhawks played football for only one quarter on Saturday and if they do that against Nebraska, they won’t win and they won’t be shocking anyone. The comeback was incredible, but it masked what was an embarrassing performance for three quarters.

Freshman running back James Sims scored four times. Three of those touchdowns came in the fourth quarter.

“It felt great,” Sims said. “I would just like to thank my offensive line. They blocked for me, and they believed in me and I believed in them.”

Sims’ performance was admirable and it could be a real spring board for this freshman as he continues to develop.

What really gets to me is that this reaction to a win at home versus Colorado, regardless of how it happened, truly shows you how far this program has fallen in the last couple years. It took a miracle to win and Gill calls it a huge victory for this program.

I’m waiting for the day that Gill has the Jayhawks ready so they’re not down by 30 or 40 points at home in a conference game. Credit to the players for not giving up, but only if you’re at peace knowing you’re one of the worst teams in a BCS conference will you thank God for winning at home against a team almost equally as bad.

If Kansas really did turn a corner in the last five years, let’s not be satisfied with wins against bad teams.

God obviously hates Colorado, that's why he didn't let them win..

LMAO..

When can we fire this nut job of a coach.. !!!!

Jules: This was Divine Intervention! You know what "divine intervention" is?

Vincent: Yeah, I think so. That means God came down from Heaven and stopped the bullets.

Jules: Yeah, man, that's what it means. That's exactly what it means! God came down from Heaven and stopped the bullets.

Vincent: I think we should be going now.

Jules: Don't do that! Don't you f'ing do that! Don't blow this sh*t

MAX you are a Wet blanket, sourpuss, captain anal britches, must be an uplifting inspiration to all those around you. . So glad you took the time to write such a downer article.
You should apply at Hallmark right now and include this article in your resume. Title it "How to whine and cry about anything" I am certain you are one of those guys who takes credit and says "we" when KU wins in any sport and says "you guys" when one of KUs teams is not nationally ranked. So sad that 'Our" J school has sliiped so far as to let this trash be printed.

Would love to see what you wrote after the bball team got beat last year. I am certain it was (bowel) moving as well.

this is to soac, if he/she ever looks at this again:

first of all let me just say that this win was amazing and the players deserve credit for pulling it off

second: you can not say that if we perform like we did against colorado that we will upset nebraska. the fact about saturday is we only showed up for one quarter

third: if you are a true ku fan as you sound like you are, based off of your immature hissy fit, you should listen to what max is saying. when the 2 worst teams in the big 12 who are equally bad play each other we can not be impressed with a win regardless of the fashion.

fourth: when we lost in march last season he did not rip the team a new one. he analyzed the game and then congradulated them on a good season

and fifth: get you facts straight, do not act like the very words you yourself have written down, and oh yah you gave him the exact reaction he was looking for so congrats

Titan, Hey if KU football is close in the 4th quarter has a legit shot to win another game this season it is going to take the Father, The Son , and The Holy Ghost, the Pope, and Mama T all being Jayhawks. The 2nd greatest comeback in Div 1 football - what is the point of tearing down that accomplishment? Fox sports replaying the game based on the actions not the record of the teams.
KU coaches, players, fans, anyone attached to KU football, needed a positive shot in the arm. Never apologize for a win, and thank whoever you want.

Soac, you are a complete idiot. FSN is replaying "portions" of the game (most likely the 4th quarter). I'm sorry, but I really don't think you can count it as the 2nd greatest when it was against the worst team in the division. It was an amazing accomplishment, but when you break it down, really not that impressive. Also, if we would have played like that the whole game, it never would have needed to happen. That is why I dislike it the most. If they would have showed up in the first quarter, the 4th quarter wouldn't have needed to happen.

It's not an issue of being a fan. I love all Jayhawk sports (when is the last time you went to a volleyball, women's basketball, baseball, men's/women's soccer, or any of the others?). The fact that I am a fan does not mean that I cannot or should not say you are doing a terrible job, get you heads out of you backsides and play the game! It means that I as a fan am at the game cheering on these guys and they don't have the respect for themselves or the team the play on to take part in the game. That is my problem with the football team, and has been for a long time.

So it it safe to say that the basketball team reaching 61 straight home victories should have an asterick by it. Alcorn, Arkansas Pine Bluff, Longwood, and the other check collectors for the last 3 years should not count cause they are bottom of the barrel opponents. Please tell everyone when they are doing a terrible job cause you are a Jayhawk and you have that right. That makes perfect sense.
Willing to let every KU athlete and coach critique you?
