University Relations speaks about Anschutz Sports Pavilion fire
University Relations spokeswoman Jill Jess spoke to media about a fire outside Anschutz Sports Pavilion Tuesday morning.
A fire broke out from an exterior cooling unit on the southwest corner Anschutz Sports Pavilion near Allen Fieldhouse at about 10:40 this morning. KU Public Safety Officers issued an alert text message to stay away from the area just before 11 a.m.
One employee was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for minor smoke inhalation, said Jill Jess, University spokeswoman. Jess could not yet identify the employee or his or her job title.
Jess said Anschutz Sports Pavilion and part of Wagnon Student Athlete Center were evacuated. Jess had no information on how many people were evacuated or damage costs. She said there had not been issues with this equipment before.
The inside of the building was not damaged and only minor smoke was detected inside. Tonight's basketball game will not be affected.
No children at nearby Hilltop Daycare were injured, said Executive Director Pat Pisani. Children were evacuated from a portion of the building as a safety precaution. Operations have since returned to normal at the daycare.
